I would not recommend going further than 17inch wheels on a 944/968 and stick with genuine Porsche wheels, the aftermarket ones tend to buckle on the inside edge at the rear and are soooo heavy.
Porsche released a TSB many years ago advising that if the 944 is to be fitted with 17 inch wheels, you should use the 968 caster mounts or the 944 Turbo cup caster mounts or even the 968 Turbo RS caster mounts if you want to go with 18 inch wheels. In the same TSB they recommended that the 944 Cabrio was not fitted with anything bigger than 16's, but my personal take is that is a little too conservative as the 944 cab seems to be fine on 17's as long as they have a caster mount upgrade.
The right wheel makes such a massive difference. For my personal road cars I tend to stick with the standard Porsche wheels, for example an early pre 87 car (turbo or lux) using 16 inch teledials, or a late car using 16 inch design 90's, 17 inch cup ones, or 17 inch cup 2's, or even the 17 inch 986 Boxster S wheels, with these wheels you can't go far wrong... For track or highly tuned mad examples I go for 18 inch Porsche genuine wheels or speedlines.
