Search is over!

Get her on Tuesday all being well and can't wait.

Its a different car to the one I needed wheels for, but I still need a set Brett so will take those you have if they are still on offer. No rush though as will sell the wheels that are on it first once it arrives. I know you need them for a while anyway.

Looking forward to the tasks ahead. Its going to be fun.

Hi :)

You are welcome to them whenever you wish, you may want to have them polished though :)

I put them on the car yesterday and the rubber is better than I thought, my others will be finished by next Wednesday hopefully so you can have them any time after that....

All the best Brett :)

Its arrived!

Let battle commence.

First job is to gain access to the boot so I can fit a battery to her. The rear lock does not move at all.

Her MOT expired in Feb and has sat since then. Was running no problem, but told she has some kind of fuelling issue now as turns but won't start.

Looking through the history she has had two relays in the past, so might be worth changing first?

She needs a nip and a tuck here and there but biggest job is respray.

Other issue is fitting her in my garage. She fits ... but door can't be opened. Whoops!

So - Any recommendations on brand of battery? And has anyone encountered a knackered boot lock?

Thanks all,
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

First..the hatch lock....there are 2 proper ways to open it...

1, Key...turn 1/4 turn to the right...

2, Pull the hatch release thats down by the handbrake (round knob that pulls upwards)...you have to have the door open i think for it to work....there is also another pull on the passenger side in same place...

Battery...biggest amperage you can get....original is a Bosch but Varta is same company....I seem to remember its around 96 or 98 amp/hour

All the best Brett :)

What Brett said, except option 2 requires electrical power so if you're trying to get in to replace a flat battery you might end up going in through the front doors and over the back seats

Fuelling "issues" could be almost anything, what model year is the car, manual or electronic injection?

Thanks Guys,

Going to pick up a battery when I am out and about tomorrow. Will get biggest amps I can get.

Can't seem to find anyone who sells Bosch, but have not looked too hard yet.

Agree ... looks like its over the seats for the moment.

The lock is totally solid .... does not move at all. Think its a goner.

Its a Aug 85 ... so would be a 86 model?

Not even opened the bonnet yet as it got delivered this evening and stuck it straight in the garage. Not sure if its mechanical injection or not.

Off to bed, will find some time tomorrow to tinker.

Thanks for the advice,

Regards
Paul

Hi :)

Oops I forgottted that the pulls will NOT work with a flat battery, but the key "should"

All the best Brett :)

Hi Paul :)

Wow if its an 86 model S2 like mine you got a fantastic bargain...

They are the last year of S2`s and have S4 brakes and suspension.....

Look at the front calipers.....if they are 4 pot Brembos instead of 2 pot then its an "86 model"

It will also have twin distributors....

Ah....I more important point about the battery.... you NEED to measure it....BEFORE buying one....

The reason is that the 86 model has a slightly smaller battery (length) than the earlier S2.....its because the exhaust goes across the edge of the battery box and once the battery is removed you will see what looks like one corner of the battery box with a dented in corner.....its MEANT to look like that lol...Porsche did it, even though it LOOKS like someone hit it with a hammer from underneath...

From memory the early S2 HAS SOMETHING like a 14 inch long batttery and the 86 S2 has one around 12 inches (i.e 2 inches shorter)

Also I seem to remember that the battery books in shops do NOT show the 86 model as its too rare.....they just showed S2....MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ITS DIMENSIONS before you buy one...

All the best Brett :)

Last time I looked (admittedly several years ago) GSF http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ were the cheapest for the Bosch Silver if you've got a local branch.

As you've got an S2 with the electronic ignition you might want to start with the troubleshooting guide at http://www.jdsporsche.com/fault%20find.html for your non-starting. You may find that a fresh battery with more capacity is all that's needed - happened to me when my less-than-recommended-capacity battery was old; it would turn the engine over until the battery went flat but it wouldn't turn it fast enough to start it.

Thanks Guys,

I tried to get a battery when I was out today, but no luck. Even tried Porsche themselves but a three day wait.
I have only just got in from work anyway so couldn't have done anything tonight anyway.
I have ordered a Varta battery that I am picking up tomorrow morning when I get my Jeep MOT'd. They tell me its all singing and dancing so hope its ok.

On the year of the car I cant get into the engine yet. In fact have not even seen it. Its been wedged in my small garage since last night and I cant get inside to pop the bonnet. Going to wait until I have fitted the battery and can move the car out if it will start. I hope there is an engine in there!

Would be great if its an 86, but not holding breath. I suspect not as I did see the empty battery hole and from memory it was bigger than 12", but we will see.

Thanks again for the help!
Regards
Paul
