Get a proper old school battery charger and leave it on charge overnight. You need to get a decent amount of amps into them to get all the sulphate off the plates. You need to get them gassing properly to sort them out. Short journeys and cold weather are never good for batteries this time of year. Trickle chargers are also no use as the current is feck all out of them.

Thanks Alasdair.

I got an 8 amp battery charger, however when I took the battery out and plugged it in, it was showing over 80% so didn't think that was the problem.

Won't do any harm to leave it on overnight and see what happens. The charger also has a "pulse repair" mode that is meant to clean up the plates, maybe should try that mode?

Well worth a try, 80 percent is a bit low for a fully charged battery. Like with most things nowadays, the quality is poor on 99 percent of products nowadays.

It's a top of the range Yuasa battery, £135 quid's worth. But aye, it probably isn't the best like all modern stuff. It's soldiering on just now, left it a couple of days and it still started fine. Won't do any harm to run a repair/charge cycle one night and see what transpires.

Last Bosch I bought went on for 4 years, 8 months and got a helluva lot of abuse whilst I swapped engines and got it running. I bought a Yuasa for my Ford Transit and never replaced it. So I am not sure everything is not as good as should be. I think that's luddite talk.

"When I were a lad..."

The 5 year warranty is why you should buy the Bosch*.

*...and not Bosch power tools they're sh*t.

Anyhoo. This past 2 weeks has been spent recovering from lurgy. Though I did have the good sense err... 'fortune' to have it jacked up on axle stands before the lurgy hit.
Have been coughing up deep green stuff of a rubbery consistency. It must have potential attributes of a mechanical application.

This meant that I could pop out now and again doing stuff on the Porker. Like adjusting the tail gate lock and replacing the little inserts at the back of the rear hatch locks. Ordered from Germany on Monday, arrived yesterday! It was up in the air to reconcile rattles. I came across lots of potential suspects. Whether it's made a difference on our beautiful 3rd world roads, remains to be seen. Today will be the day. Good excuse for coffee and cake in a far away town where I can quietly ogle that waitress.

No doubt, the first pothole will test the rear hatch - traditionally popping up on the RHS. Also, the LHS pin rattled.

Remembered I had a spare rotor arm connector piece. No part number. Page 334 of the PET catalogue. Available only as a complete unit (with rotor arm) for a measly £379 direct from Porsche. Ordered a rotor arm and listed it on fleabay. Whilst looking for a rear hatch key barrel return spring in amongst the spares boxes., came across a second connector piece. Kerching!! That'll pay for stuff.

Once you have the desired hatch pin length, tight enough not to rattle, not so tight they pop open, the next trick is to loosen the latches (2 x 10mm I think) to finger tight, and open and close the boot a few times to let them get into the optimum position. Then tighten them up just a smidge over finger tight. That way they will move ever so slightly to the correct central position during use and not be locked fast slightly out of centre. This will also largely prevent them from freezing open on sub zero days. I've no idea why that is the case, but I can assure you it is!!

Well, all that worked for me anyway! My boot has been rattle free now for 10+ years.

I've just about got it sussed. Didn't pop open on me today (96 miles). I''ll try that centralising trick and I have got some Nyloc flange M6 to put on just over 'finger tight'.

Spent a couple of joyous hours in the freezing cold destroying brass brushes in the name of cleaning up the transaxle.....
I might just take it to the dry ice blaster and have done with it....?! :?:

What's not to like about that?!

Strange human. :D

You are using the dizzy variety rather than the hand variety H?
Is it removed from the car?

Yep, the transaxle and the TT assembly are both out from their normal habitat.

I've bolted the transaxle to a 3/4" ply skate so its easy to get in & out of the garage and I can also rotate it round to the next section to clean whilst sitting on the mechanics stool.

I've got a selection of brass brushes for the drill, the cordless angle grinder and the Dremel too as well as toothbrush size hand brushes. It would seem as though at some point the car may have been treated to a Waxoyl or something similar as there is definitely something over swathes of the transaxle casting as well as loads of dried on mud.

It's not that I wasn't enjoying it. As you know, it is rather tedious job and I'd quite like to get to the painting and protecting part!

No surprises, more transaxle cleaning! I destroyed around 10 Dremel brushes today alone. However, I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel and there is more done than there is left to do :D
I'm going to have to invest in some extended Dremel brushes to get into some of the deeper crevices, but I feel like progress has been made.

129 mile round trip of Galloway yesterday.

Points to note:
Roads are shockingly poor
Fuddy duddy's and twits should be banned from driving (like that*).
It was sunny! Actual real sun. I'm not lying.
Coffee and cake was average.

*Stuck behind numerous folks out for a jolly. I was behind a Hyundai and in front of that, a silver Golf. It's a bendy road (perfect 944 country) with not that many overtaking places. Silver golf is crawling along. Down to 25 mph on some bends. I elect to overtake after tailing these two for 8 miles. I beep my horn at him as I pass. He flashes his lights furiously again and again.
Now: he has every right to drive at that speed but he has no right to hold every body up.

A coffee stop later...

Lots of slow cars in the sticks and now out of the sticks but on the main road back. Pulled over and removed the sunroof. 1st time in ages and ages.
Now stuck behind a long line of retro motor bikers! They didn't do more than 55. Up this overtaking lane and I pass them and a heap of other cars doing 50ish. At the end of this line of traffic is a woman in an Audi A3 in the right hand lane of this over this 4 mile stretch of overtaking lane. The overtaking lane is coming to an end. I am on the left and travelling quicker than her and I flash her in. I do not want to keep going in case she suddenly flushes left. I don't know why she is in the right hand lane in the first place - there was no one else in the left lane. She does not move over but she is going slower and slower all the time. I have to slow down to avoid undertaking and running the risk of her suddenly flushing left (I am potentially in her blind spot and I do not know if she knows I am even there), plus the overtaking lane is almost over. She finally flushes left and we're down to 40mph... I'm now stuck behind her.

Wind forward 6 miles and after some road works and traffic lights, I am behind 7 cars and this gravy train doing 40 max. It's an A road. FFS! Eventually, there is this long overtaking stretch - a very wide road that could easily be 4 lanes designed I guess to allow people to overtake at will. Except, 6 of the 7 cars are in the middle of the lane and not over to the left. Nonetheless, I pass 6 as there are no cars in the other side of the road but as I approach the last car on the left of me, an on coming car is quickly heading towards me and I do not know whether to keep going or slam the brakes on and fit in behind the last car. The driver of this last car (a Skoda Octavia) however, sees me and indicates and moves left allowing me to overtake safely. I put my hand up through the sunroof hole and give him the thumbs up which was reciprocated. I really appreciated that presence of mind. The only highlight in a long series of being stuck behind whoever.
It seems to me that since lockdown, there are legions of crawling dithering diddery doddery fuddy duddies. Or is it just me? The self entitled brigade who do not care one jot that they are holding everybody up. As I say, they have every right to drive at a snails pace (on B roads) but they should let people pass. They have no right to drive at a snails pace on A roads in perfect conditions.

Seems like it was more of a stressful drive than an enjoyable one and to make it worse the coffee and cake was only average- Bummer! At least the sum was shining and you must have had some spectacular scenery to admire- particularly as you got to look at it for longer.......!
