If you think a 944 is bad in snow you should try a 2.8i with an lsd and camac tyres in the wet never mind the snow

You should try a 2.8i with a turbo and an lsd on 50 series P7 tyres :).

I had a 3.0s with triple webers and full race spec engine on old p7f tyres that was bloody scary and 200 bhp at the wheels.

:D I had a 3.0S with the Saymar 4 barrel Holley set up, group 1 gas flowed big valve heads, 3.1 engine, 5 speed gearbox conversion etc. Bought a 2.8 injection at the same time and did a Turbo Technics conversion on it. 15" Brooklands wheels, LSD, group 1 billies, anti dive double width kit and other stuff I've forgotten. The turbo murdered the 3.0S so I took all the goodies of it and sold it. Happy days.

I was never that impressed with the tt, a friend and fellow owner had one of higher output kits I think 230 bhp and it couldn't keep up with my s.

I ran my turbo at higher boost than Turbo Technics recommended and had big bore exhausts. The Sierra Cosworth hadn't been out long when I built mine, I remember having a play with one and staying glued to it's rear bumper up to 140. The advantage the 2.8 turbo had was torque, no way a 3.0 could match the surge when it came on boost.

Sorry, I dont agree with the title. You tried to kill yourself with your car in the snow.

Ever since I slid off a mountain in 1994 with my BMW 325I on summers in Switzerland (yes, I am a harebrain), I use winter tyres from Oct till March. I go several times a year to visit my family over there, so it would make sense to run two sets of alloys with appropriate tyres.

I keep banging on about it: snow driving is all about traction. My 924S is ridiculously good on the snow: the ground clearance is quite good (bit like a giraffe), adjustable Koni's/968 ARB/corner weighting etc all done so it gives perfect feedback. The 50/50 weight distribution provides good handling, and I just overtake bell ends with their range rovers on 21 inch summers like a breeze. Lights: some upgraded lightbulbs and a headlight relay go a long way. Equally, the 911's headlamps collect quicker the snow pile up than the 924/944 in my experience.....

The only car better than my transaxle in snow .... is the old 911.

Kind regards,

Bert
PS: get some appropriate tyres on it!

i think the purpose of my post was to share my experience, so that others could benefit from the situation i found myself in. If id looked at the forecast before i set out early and knew there was going to be snow, then the 44 would have stayed at home. However that wasnt the case and i found myself in a situation with my recent purchase that was less than ideal.

i know that whatever i say, there are always going to be people that have had a different experience, but what im reporting on is as a new owner things i wasnt expecting.

so i wasnt expecting that during my 80 mile main road journey i would be hit by a sudden snow storm
i didnt expect the headlights to get so covered in snow that it prevented them from being any use at their intended purpose.
equally ive never had a car behave in the throwing itself sideways way on a straight road, on snow or any other conditions, when i was the slowest car out there, due to the lack of headlights.

so sure ive learnt my tyres are old and i should get them replaced, ive learnt the headlights in certain conditions stop working so wont be taking her out if snow is on the cards. Also recent cold times ive learnt that despite filling the locks with lithium grease, they still freeze, so until i find a better solution i carry a lighter.

As you clearly use your cars in much more severe conditions that we have over here, do you have a technique that saves you from lighting a small bonfire to get into the car on a frosty morning? any tips would be welcome, as my key has started to take on a distinctly black patina.

cheers

Rear wheel drive + snow... what's not to love?? If proper tyres fitted of course!

Look at this old 924 YouTube clip and enjoy :bounce:
