Having non start issues on my s2 coupe.

The starter motor doesn't even try. It acts as if the thatcham immobiliser was not deactivated with the key fob insert. Could be issue?

All electrics work fine. Spare DME relay tried.

We considering trying a spare starter too.

If anyone in the South of Scotland wants to help, please let me know and I'll forward my address.

This is a stressful time as I'm moving house in 3 weeks.

It literally just got through an MOT with no advisories too!

clean the "usb" style key and the socket with switch cleaner, the sockets are known to break.

they are about £45.00 from Hamilton Palmer

http://www.hamilton-palmer.co.uk/

and a new fob is the same sort of money, I would get a sparks to remove that and fit a toad or similar

The following link may be of use if you decide to get the Thatcham Alarm/Immobiliser changed

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=15155&hilit=+Toad#p99868

I had a Toad Ai606 Thatcham Category 1 security Alarm/Immobiliser fitted in Jan 2007 when I took ownership of my 944 Turbo.
It was recommended, supplied and Fitted at JMG with ALL remnants of the old system(s) being removed.
I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with this since :D .
I can certainly recommend this Alarm/Immobiliser but more importantly as has been suggested is getting the old system fully removed and the new one installed.

Cheers. Problem being that the car is immobile in it's current state. Would need someone to come out.

Since you swapped the relay I assume you checked the fuses.

If that doesn't help any auto electrician will be able to disable the immobiliser for you. If you are in the AA that is worth a shot. If you call an auto electrician they can usually fit the new immobiliser at the same time.

It is also worth buying a cheap multimeter from Maplin or Amazon and checking to see it Yiu are getting voltage at the starter motor or not.

I take it that by " the starter motor doesn't even try " you mean that the starter motor does not turn the engine over ..Yes ???

there could be several reasons for this .
Some immobilisers are very crude and simply introduce a switch between the ignition switch and the starter motor solenoid . They are easily bypassed with a single piece of wire .Basically this is "hot wiring" which is usually done at the ignition switch .

It could be a faulty starter solenoid switch
it could be a jammed or faulty starter motor
it could also be a faulty ignition switch.

First
Check you have a constant 12v+ at terminal 30 on the starter solenoid ,ignition off.(This is fed straight from the battery.)
next check your starter motor has an earth
Take a wire from the battery Positive 12v+( red) terminal and brush it across the other starter solenoid (terminal 50 )with the ignition switch in the off position.

If the starter motor does not turn the engine over you have a faulty starter solenoid or starter motor. If the starter motor spins the engine then fit a 3x wire bypass in place of the DME relay and your car should start . If it doesn't start then we can go to the next step
Don't forget to put the car in second gear and rock it back and forth to check that the starter is not jammed

Yes peanut, that was rude of me.

The issue was infact the Hamilton Palmer immobiliser. The contacts had been damaged. A new one was fitted and it all works nicely.
