I take it that by " the starter motor doesn't even try " you mean that the starter motor does not turn the engine over ..Yes ???
there could be several reasons for this .
Some immobilisers are very crude and simply introduce a switch between the ignition switch and the starter motor solenoid . They are easily bypassed with a single piece of wire .Basically this is "hot wiring" which is usually done at the ignition switch .
It could be a faulty starter solenoid switch
it could be a jammed or faulty starter motor
it could also be a faulty ignition switch.
First
Check you have a constant 12v+ at terminal 30 on the starter solenoid ,ignition off.(This is fed straight from the battery.)
next check your starter motor has an earth
Take a wire from the battery Positive 12v+( red) terminal and brush it across the other starter solenoid (terminal 50 )with the ignition switch in the off position.
If the starter motor does not turn the engine over you have a faulty starter solenoid or starter motor. If the starter motor spins the engine then fit a 3x wire bypass in place of the DME relay and your car should start . If it doesn't start then we can go to the next step
Don't forget to put the car in second gear and rock it back and forth to check that the starter is not jammed

Having non start issues on my s2 coupe.
The starter motor doesn't even try. It acts as if the thatcham immobiliser was not deactivated with the key fob insert. Could be issue?
All electrics work fine. Spare DME relay tried.
We considering trying a spare starter too.
If anyone in the South of Scotland wants to help, please let me know and I'll forward my address.
This is a stressful time as I'm moving house in 3 weeks.
It literally just got through an MOT with no advisories too!
