Seen worse, should clean up with a light skim.

The skim has not removed all traces of corrosion but to go much further ment it was getting close to max tolerence ....(without going on to a thicker head gasket etc).

any thoughts guys ??

Also i have got to the point of stripping out the the timing belts, tensioners etc and replacing all the seal and o-rings, lots issues with getting it apart the front crank timing belt pulley was seized to the crank ..after spraying liberally with penetrating oil and fixing up a 3 legged puller (sounds easy noooooo that meant plenty of teasing to get it off ) got all the covers in the hot wash at work come out like new.... the o-ring had disintergrated and the oil pump drive had a BIG in it so in went a new one.......the lower balancer shaft wood ruff key had been "mullered" in by the last spanner monkey to go there and he had used a tube of hammerite to seal the housing as the o-ring recess looked like a welders apron  the new o-rings for the balancer shaft hsgs were to big so thats a job for tues if i get the parts.

my main quandry is the WATER PUMP ,,,it has been changed to turbo one (i guess by spanner monkey last time he was let loose it),,its not leaking, there is no excess free play in the impeller shaft and its about 250 -300 quid to change...so whats the advice guys ???????

All in all not a bad job so far and a great learning curve :D ,,,more midnight oil burning coming

cheers

All water pumps are now Turbo ones, they stopped doing different ones some time ago. This is a Tech Note in my manuals.

TBH you'd have probably been OK skimming a bit further, the min limit is normally a very safe figure. Looks OK though.
Put plenty of grease on the seals when you assemble it, it's a trick my Dad showed me as it stops the seals burning on start up before the oil gets there.

DON'T leave powder coating anywhere inside, the hot oil flakes it off & it then blocks oilways, then BANG
Their was a spate of it after some dodgy guy was flogging Vauxhall bits powder coated on fleabay, I think one of the GM crews was getting up a lynching party!

Did mine with hammerite (Smooth) then polished the letters with an old file & then emery. Still looks good 12mths on. Cheaper too. If the seals arn't perfect on the cam replace them. Stainless bolt look nice. (Peanuts on ebay) The Cometic cambox gasket from Lindsey racing should cure the famous cambox oil leak for good. (Mine just started weeping again after 12mths with the stock gasket & I had it all checked for true when it was in bits.)

I'm not too keen on painted camboxes, but they look amazing when cleaned up properly like this:

Do you know what process was used to get that finish ..sand or bead blasted...loks like the PORSCHE letters have been properly milled flat ...nice like it ..We have a fine sand blaster cabinet at work so i'm gonna try that ...i was heading towards this, but not the white ex manifold !!

I've done them before. One way is to paint & then mill them off, I now have a mill so can do that method again. The way I did the Rover was to paint them with car paint & then wet & dry them off used wet. Then clear lacquer the whole thing.

Pics below:-

I'm not sure to be honest but I think it was dipped in a chemical cleaner, it certainly wasn't milled flat. Simon Peckham (who does the engines for Jon Mitchells Garage) did it when he built my engine.

Could be chemical clean or vapour blasted.

Stripped off the water pump,,,its got :- 944 106 124.3R on the casing on the inner (block side) casing also there is "95" within a circle of dots ..i've seen this before on cast components , i'm assuming its a date stamp ???

Tried a quick search under that pt no ....on there are several options;

Bert's the most expensive :-

http://partsforporsche.co.uk/osc/turbo- ... f97492864d

D9 looks a lot cheaper and it states german manufacture !!

http://www.d9autotech.co.uk/product.asp ... 7&P_ID=549

A bit confusing pic wise as it shows the turbo one without the outlet flange to the turbo ?, i'm looking for one that is has not got the nylon elbow that has to be blanked off with a hose ended off

Anyone know of any more suppliers of quality pumps (seen some Laso stateside websites any been there for one ?)

cheers

Bert isn't the cheapest but he is good when things go pear shaped. He is also an oracle of advice that you won't get from some others. I also use GSF for common stuff (Tipec discount) & Lindsey Racing though the shipping is now an issue.
