I would agree the micro switch is at fault...it was the first job I did on my car I was really chuffed when it worked
the other issue is a real phaf
First I would check that the lock pawls open all the way they can be adjusted by altering the rod length by turning the nut hidden behind the panel.
once you have full opening then ensure the tailagte spigots are dead centre in the locks you need to move the locks not the spigots after doing this you may have to re-adjust the rods again
I would guess the reason it does not open is it is just catching as it operates (assuming your struts are OK).
