908 project found!
Whilst walking with my wife and the dogs on Sunday we stumbled across some workshops on a old farm and a 911 caught my eye so went over to have a closer look, to my surprise it was a white left hand drive 2.7 rs replica, with correct mag wheels, wide bodied non sunroof, and a 72 i think!. it even had a correct 2.7 engine.
Being blown away by this i thought was good enough for a Sunday walk in the country but when the workshop door open and a man in his 60's came over to us and asked if i liked Porsche's? he then went on to tell me that he also has a 3.0 litre carrera of which he said he doesn't no why he has kept it as its got tartan interior and its a horrid metalic red, lol.
He hasn't driven the cars for about 5 years he said he just moves them now and again.
Back to my heading! He could tell i was a bit Porsche mad so he invited me into the workshop to see something! thinking to myself what other surprises lurked around those doors.
The surprise was indeed a very shocking one the man in question has been building for the past 8 years on and off a exact copy of the beautiful Porsche 908 coupe, all by himself he has made complete body moulds by making a full size model from scaled drawings and hundreds of photos collected over the years,
A chassis sit's on the engineers table 99% complete with just the screen hoop and roof bars to be welded in, this has been done to the same spec as original from factory chassis drawings even down to using the same size tubing and gas welded as same as they did in the late 60's,
All patterns have been made for uprights all suspension components and wheels, the rear uprights had just come back from the heat treaters this week and he was just about to start machining them,a couple of body parts had been done also he said using epoxy resin and twill just like they used.
This was a true Porsche nut and knew everything possible about the 908 and has lived and breathed it for nearly ten years.
His trade is a pattern maker and does allot of rare race parts for a couple of well known historic car restorers, he is also a styling buck builder and does body bucks for alloy car builders and design's and builds one off body's,
He has asked to not be named and iv got to respect him as he is the nicest bloke you could meet i asked him if i could share a thew photos of his project and he was happy to for me to do so as long as i don't say where he is..
so hope you enjoy a couple of photos iv taken and I'm driving up there again the weekend to take some more photos with a fully charged camera and take some of the rs as well as the alloy 550 body buck that is being made in the corner of the workshop.
hope you enjoy
Shaun

Wow that is impressive! Lovely craftsmanship in that chassis as well.
First 908 I sae in the flesh was at classic Le Mans this year, in fact there were 3 or 4, I didn't know there were that many around.

Re: 908 project found!
HMMM he did mention some gt40 guy called chris was trying to make one from a 910 chassis! and apparently it was all a bit of a smoke and mirrors project?! sounds like the same guy he was talking a bit about? i wonder what ever happened to that? I'm really interested in this 908 now its has got me really excited to come across something as interesting as this in the middle of nowhere!Red Rider wrote:Interesting story. Re: 908 project found!
There's a guy lives around the corner from me has two old Porsche's in his garage. They have been there for the last 25 years. Never seen either of them ot on the road. A bit nervous of going there and asking about them, people round here are a bit snotty. I'll have to see if I can get some pics of them when his garage is open. Also another guy did have the car from the film 'The Car' parked in his garage. Can't go in there either - scared of his big guard dogs.. lol..

Re: 908 project found!
Hi! Very interesting find.
I dont think Porsche made many coupes as they had trouble with the back end being unstable at speed on the Mulsanne. They had a rear wing system which increased the downforce as the back end lifted at speed. The rules changed to allow a lower windscreen height and so Porsche brought out the open cars(908/2),which as we know went on to be extremely successful for Porsche.Has he got a 3.0L engine for it?
