Worth migrating from a 986 to a 987?

Post by nigelga »

Is it the case that a 987 variant might afford a little more cockpit room? I believe the steering wheel can be raised or lowered as opposed to my 986 which is just in/out. But is a 987 a better car! I would look to what I currently have a 'basic' 5sp 2.7l . My 986 is a very 'honest' car but it is 22 years old and I need (but not must at this very moment) to replace the rear silencer box and cats (x2); the front suspension needs refreshing as top mounts bump stops and springs are not in a great condition.

The bodywork is really, really good and has over its life been maintained well (servicing). I am mindful that buying a first gen 987 might just give as many issues. For example a top dollar one selling locally, asking price £11,990 with 63k miles and good service history. Same dealer might offer £4k for my 986 in p/e but has this 987 had the clutch, flywheel and all brake discs and pads replaced. Given the disparity it's might be best to stick and upgrade within reason to how you want your car to be.

As an aside I had been recently recommended an independent by someone who has their race GT3 prepped by this outfit. It has come to their notice that the issues I have noted above are not exclusive to my 986. German metal is not necessarily as good as they would have you believe!
