Teledials on a 83' pre abs 944

Post by CaptainSlow »

Hi is it possible to put the 52 offset teledials on an early car? If not what are the wheel choices available?

I thought teledials had a 23 offset or did they come in 2 sizes?

You will probaly need to use spacers to make them fit properly.

For me the fuchs' or the cookie cutters really suit the early car. I think you'll have to mess about with spacers if you want the teledials at any rate.

Quite agree Adam. The spacers will have to be quite chunky as well around 30mm or so which won't do early wheel bearings much good!
Aside from which they won't be cheap!

If they are teledials off an early 928 they have a different offset.
Don't know what it is but I was offered some 16" teledials but they wouldn't fit my erly 944

What about a nice set of 3 piece Revolution Split rims?
7 & 8 x 15" and almost new tyres, currently being refurbed so they could be any colour you like.

1986 model year telephone dials suit older cars and have an offset of 23mm. These can sometimes be found in 6" & 7" x 15" fitments too, as they were the original fitment wheels on 3.2l 911 Carreras.

16" teledials also have the 23 offset iirc. i prefer 23 offset as they look 'deep dish' compared to later 53

on the subject of spacers, this is something that puzzled me; people says spacers = wheel bearing wear. I understand extending an offset ie to widen the track will result in more strain on the bearings, but if all youre doing with the spacer is correcting the offset to match a standard fitting (ie so the contact patch is the same track as original) how does that mean bearing wear?

True in this case, but they will A. Increase the unsprung weight B. if not 100% accurate increase the loads on the hub & wheel bearing.

Thats certainly true, but 1986 model year Turbo wheels are the rarest 944 wheels. If the OP can find a set....

But surely as you are moving the contact area where the weight of the car is acting on the bearing, this would increase the leverage on the bearings and increase the possible wear

No, contact area of the tyre to the road & bearing stay in the same plane, all you are moving is where the wheel & hub meet in relation to that. In other words loads on the bearing stay effectively the same.

I adapted a diagram to show what i understand to be the principle; the left wheel is an early 23 mm offset, the right a 52. the green bar is the hub, the red a 29mm spacer. Both result in the same track and equal strain on the hub & bearings other than any difference due to the change in unsprung weight.

Image

please let me know if im mistaken here.

im considering some 17x7J ET55 fronts and 17x9J ET65 cup 2 rears off a 993, so think i would need 3 and 13 mm spacers respectively to maintain the same offset. Im guessing a 13mm spacer is too long for the bolts and too short for a bolt on spacer, also worried the 9j rim will foul the bodywork and the car will handle worse. the dilemma of form vs function eh ;D

anyone put a 9J rear rim on a '88 944? standard (ie non-rolled) rear arches.

I think it could be done, but you would ideally need hubcentric spacers :).
