Power Steering Rack Rebuild kit

Post by marks2ply »

Hi All

I’m intending to strip down my power steering rack and replace all the seals.
I see that rennbay have a RHD kit as do 944 online.

Is there an option available anywhere in the Uk?

Any help would be great!

Regards

The USA seem to suffer so many more rack failures, for the amount of hassle rebuilding a rack is, personally I would just take it to a rack specialist

But they would know what bits you would need anyway

I rebuilt mine myself, most rebuild places give you someone else's rack and exchange yours to fix that in due course. Also, good piece of mind that all seals are replaced and not just the outer ones.

I'll see if I can dig it out, but I found the schematics online and then ordered all the seals direct from the leading UK specialist. My rack was in perfect condition fortunately when I stripped it, no scoring whatsoever.

Personally I'd recommend going down my route as the kits didn't seem to have all the seals when I looked, and you can check the condition of your rack as well.

I ordered new track rods and boots as well, reconditioned my power steering pump, fitting new power steering hoses (the price will make your eyes water) and also installed uprated front shocks for a complete front end overhaul - obviously quite a lot easier to do with the rack out the way.

My friend is looking for a rebuild kit as well. I'll advise him about checking the seals included. Or maybe our friend mechanic can help rebuild the current one. Got to finish installing the headache rack and tonneau covers on the truck before we can clear the garage.
