80 S 14Pin connector

Post by kenthepipe »

Does anyone have a drawing showing what each individual pin is for on the 14 pin connector, (1980 4.7 S model)
I,m trying to trace a fault with the oil pressure gauge needle jumping about like a fiddlers elbow. I have just sorted hopefully a similar issue with the combined fuel/temp gauge, I managed to disconnect both multi plugs under the pod without taking the pod out cleaned the brass contact fingers with a Q-Tip and contact cleaner and I,m now getting a proper reading from them, now the oil gauge is playing up.
Hopeing this doesn't involve pod removal, I hate that job after doing that too many times.

Forgot to add I looked online and cant find a uk spec diagram.

Thanks for any info...,
Ken

Hi Ken the connections for that 14 pin connector are in various sheets on wiring diagrams, so I’m just attaching file from 1980 sheets showing the relevant oil pressure sender pins, and wiring colours at top of diagram to confirm you have the right pins. Looks like 2 and 4 are the ones to check.

Many thanks Adrian, I will check those two out. I seem to be leaning toward the oil pressure sender buried behind the alternator, unless it's a bad contact on that unit, I won't know until I can get the car on a ramp as its too restrictive getting to it on the ground?

I've not had to replace sender on my S4 though I have a new spare, but I understand the oil filter needs to be removed for access, and on some models alternator needs lowering but that's a pretty fast procedure once you've made room for pivot bolt to be withdrawn.

I ordered a new sensor from Design911 as I thought while the car is at the garage it might be a good idea to have one to hand rather than finding I need a new one and arranging it all again, this one is probably 40 years old, nothing ventured nothing gained?

I checked the 14 pin conn, and all pins are in great condition likewise solder joints, Thanks

Thank's Adrian, when they removed it they told me it was definately on it's last legs, they reckon it was partially blocked and the two connections were a bit iffy, so all cleaned were it fits and no oil contamination around it anymore. Not an area of the car I have ever cleaned due to it being only accessible on a ramp.
Probably the blockage was causing erratic readings and also pegging the needle ?

I wish they'd kept same design for later cars Ken. Had my MY91 on ramp at weekend to install new under tray, and also wanted to replace pressure sender as the original has possible leak, though the gauge behaves perfectly.

But I had to give up for now on replacing it, as the 3 pin push on plastic connector used on later cars is notoriously difficult to remove, and mine wouldn't budge more than a fraction. Couldn't take drastic measures as that connector is unique and now NLA.

That sucks Adrian, so near and yet so damn far, been there a number of times, haven't we all I suppose, that's the trouble with the older cars, parts either extremely fragile, or made from that precious resource unobtainium.
I sincerely wish you luck.

I’ll have better access to pry the connector off if I drop the alternator, but I wanted to make sure I could remove connector before going to faff of dropping alternator! Catch 28? Installing it is one of my last favourite 928 jobs, along with removing and installing undertray.

Thanks Waylander I’ll check those sources. Not too hopeful as if they existed I’m pretty sure someone on rennlist would have mentioned it.

Just a thought on connector hunting, I found that old VW models used some connectors, certainly the speaker wiring connectors were used all over the place. If you can look very carefully there might be a vw part number. Then on to Google..
Good luck.
