Rear hatch Gas strut dampers

Post by karozza »

I have sometimes seen these dampers open the hatch fully on their own when electric release is activated.

Has anyone on here bought these & do they last long?

A pair from euro car parts and a boot seat by the metre off the bay of fleas

Hatch pops open every time, and opens fully, has done for the last, nearly 3 years

Total cost was about £60

Fiddling with the latches and pins about 2.5 hours

Sounds good.

My seal still looks good. But, did you replace the seal to get better compression for the hatch to open?

Yes a bit, but you have to slacken the pins off and re align the locks

Check the latch drains while you're doing it as well. Also you may need new pins as they wear.

These were all done when I put the car back together. Everything works fine, just might think of doing as I like these conveniences, although I don't use the car that much. But, it has remote locking + Remote tailgate unlock; think it might be a nice touch to open fully on it's own.

Do you recall which struts; they have 2? One is the cheaper version which they state as "Best Seller" & the other OE Quality at nearly 3 times the price?

I’m a total cheapskate so would have been the cost effective solution, although I did have to replace the ball socket on the drivers side one, as it was plastic and no earth for the heated rear window, small hassle for 1/3 of the price
