First 928 question

Post by AlexS »

Hello all,

Does anybody know where I might be able to get the instrument cluster in my '91 928 repaired so all the bulbs are refreshed (possibly changed to LED) and some dead pixels in the bottom displays repaired? I've seen that services exist for BMWs but haven't been able to find a service for 928s as yet!

Cheers

Alex.

Hi Alex, sounds like you're not to far away from Paul Anderson in Stroud.

Hi Alex

Another MY91 owner here.

I’ve had the cluster out a few times, but not bothered converting to LED though it is possible and detailed in this write-up. If you just have a few blown bulbs it’s frankly easier to stick to the original incandescent. With led you need to check polarity and on the MY91 circuit board sometimes need to enlarge holes slightly to take the LED holders. If you just want a brighter cluster you can try other things (cleaning rheostat, cleaning/resilvering lighting prisms) first.

You’re the first case I’ve come across of failed pixels in the digidash!

If you’re successful finding someone to take the job on, the LED conversion is detailed here with all the holder and LED specs, so they may find it useful. It will also flag up some of the issues around the conversion, to help you decide how far you want to go.

Thanks all, yes I’m going to give Paul a shout in double-quick time; I can see from some of the old invoices that the last owner spent a *lot* of money there so hopefully they’ll remember the car and give me some honest views on things :)

I was reading about the LED conversion on that website last night - it’s way beyond my cack-handed capabilities but I was hoping I could find somewhere I could post the unit to and have it done, so thank you @Waylander, I’ll give them a shout and see what they can do...

(I drove it home in the dark last night and can’t really remember how many of the lights were still working so will check again soon)
