911 Carrera 2S - Intermediate Shaft Collapse

So driving on Sunday and I lose all power on the Mway.

Not great but even worse when it is confirmed by garage that the intermediate shaft in the engine has collapsed and that the best option is a new engine from Porsche. Cost is £12k plus VAT and £2k labour plus VAT.

Not a good day at the office.

Any advice - car is 12 years old with 103k miles and I have had it since new when I picked up in the factory.

I feel rather let down by Porsche here and am wondering whether there is any negotiation to be had with them regarding the cost of a new engine.

Don't do anything else except get the car to Hartech in Bolton. Phone them & they'll arrange collection. They will strip it & assess it & the quote will be a long way short of the 12K. And you'll get a better engine at the end of it.

Exactly what Jim said. Hartech have tons of info on their website, and really are the 'go to' for engine issues.

Hartech all the way. I have heard loads about them by people who have used their services and never heard a bad word spoken about them and the good has been excellent.

Better solution that a new engine by all accounts and certainly much more economical.

Very disappointed in Porsche that such a catastrophic problem has not been dealt with but hey ho.

Its a shame that such a great car has this black mark on the engine. It is so random and whilst there are lots of theories, no one has definitively pinned the cause down.

Barry and the team up there are brilliant, they will make her better than new and you get a chunk of your cash back when you come to sell.

Oil I think plays a part, lots of US stuff supporting this.
Barry uses Miller 10w/60 and you have stick with this to keep the warranty. Mine ran better and quieter on 15w/50.
The bearing is undersized for the load which doesn't help, but the lack of clean oil getting to it is the final straw.

I think the damage may be done in the cars early weeks. It's too low a failure rate to be something as common as oil.

There were over 215,000 made (all variants) and the failure rate is in the .0%. I am not for one minute saying this is acceptable, as you would expect a sports car to be bullet proof. The air cooled and four pots don't suffer and I don't believe owners were more mechanically sympathetic.

I agree with your points Sean, but there has been some sloppy engineering practices (by Porsche Standards) employed in that engines development (money?) . Were lessons learned? Enter the 997, oh dear, some still failing, sure a small number, well documented, but hey!! Plus the most disappointing aspect of the whole sorry state of affairs has been the level of support from the company for the relatively low number of devastated owners.

Vauxhall built cars with poor steel and the reputation lasted for decades. The wings rusted and the headlamps fell out!

I'm sure a bean counter at Porsche has been promoted for the increase in warranty renewals through IMS/RMS but they really need to consider a very hard won reputation by fixing the cars with proper service histories for a minute cost of the total marketing budget.
