Post by sam »

Has anyone done/attempted this? can you give us a heads up on what you did, what you used and how successful was it?

Cheers

I assume you mean plastic headlights. I did the Jeep last year as the cataracts forming on the lenses mean you needed a man with a red flag in front. Mine were particularly bad so I started with 800 wet & dry, used wet with a squirt of fairy liquid in the bucket. Then progressively through 1000-1500-2500 all used wet. Then some Auto Glym paint renovator (Toothpaste, T Cut or Farecla G3 would be OK, didn't have any) then AG Super Resin Polish. Finally finished off with some car wax probably Colinite to seal them. The improvement was immense & took around 30 mins for the two. But I did manage to do it on the hottest day last year.

I doubt very much that you could polish a pitted glass headlight effectively without a buffing machine and certain grades of 'grit' and hours of labour. Easier to replace the unit...?

I agree, it is probably a fairly difficult task, but would appear to be possible. Has anyone on here attempted it is the question? For sure it would be easier to fit new, have you seen the price of 993 Litronic headlamp units? £1500 a pop! if you wanted to change the lenses and gaskets, still over £300, and not without its risks. I want to do the Hella fog lenses too.

3M do a polishing compound never used it myself but sounds like what you need & as mentioned by others it needs to be applied by machine.
