964 clutch

Manual 5-speed 1992 964 cabriolet. Shifting was normal during 120 mile drive. Next morning engine starts but car did not want to shift into reverse and barely into 3rd, 4th and 5th. Finally got into reverse, got out of garage and down the street. Once warm the transmission shifted normally so I drove it about 10 miles with no issues. Next morning same issue reappears. What's up?

Sounds hydraulics related to me or at least that's where you should be concentrating first. Make sure the reservoir has sufficient fluid in it, if you have to top it up its a sure sign.
Then look at the slave cylinder by removing the engine undercover and with a pair of surgical gloves on feel for the cylinder on top of the bell housing, if it's leaking it will be all over the gloves. If it's OK do the same for the master cylinder. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply. Since my post I pulled up the floormat and noticed the clutch pedal was not positioned next to the brake pedal but several inches back towards the firewall. I pulled the clutch pedal forward and it remained in line with the brake pedal. I jumped in the seat and depressed the clutch pedal and it worked normally. I've driven the car several times now with no repeat of the problem. Also, I've checked the brake fluid level and it's full.

That doesn't sound normal to me! There is a clutch master cylinder linkage adjustment procedure in the repair manual that will take you through the correct adjustment as I think something is definitely out of whack on your car? I don't have access to the manual currently but I'm sure someone on the forums can pm you a copy. Failing that pm me after Easter and I'll get a copy to you.

I had a similar issue with my 944, the clutch wouldn't come back up. The master cylinder was leaking.

Sounds like master/slave seals letting by, and loss of fluid.
