Daily A6 has had them on for weeks. 924 turbo still has R tyres, which is interesting on my weekend dashes!! Boost is strong with these low temps!

Has it been cold enough to justify winters thus far? Ambient temp barely dropped below 10°c in Lancashire until this weekend.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance but I've never thought of tyres in any way other than they're rubber, they're not flat and they have enough tread to pass an MOT. Does our climate really justify using different tyres at different times of the year? Do you guys have 2 sets of wheels with the 2 types of tyres attached or swap out the tyres?

Mrs FarQue's MX5 has two sets of wheels and tyres as does my Ford Focus. Winter tyres worth their weight in gold during a bad Lancashire winter.

It's not just the tread for the snow etc but the compounds work well under 6c , where as normal tyres go hard and loose grip

At 30mph the stopping distance on a cold day can vary 2 car lengths.

an if everyone had them, we wouldn't get the chaos when it snows

I've never found the need either my daily 924 uses the same tyres all year round as did previous capris v6 calibra and my little fez back up car.

Must admit I've also never seen the need to go over to winter rubber, but on the other side I've never tried them either? The Porsche is always put to rest for most of the winter time so it would only be the other vehicle to consider. As I have the choice of what to do every day getting up early and braving the winter elements on our roads is not high on my list these days.

I've had a spare set of wheels with winter tyres for all our cars the past 6 years now. There has been plenty enough publicity on car shows and car websites that prove below 7 degrees or so your stopping distance is noticeably longer on normal rubber whether it is wet or dry. On the rare occasion that it snows it's even better.

I leave for work well before 8am and its been below 7 degrees plenty of times this autumn already.

I'm about to fit my first set of winter tyres to my Audi RS4. I've seen enough evidence that they're worth the extra cost. I can't remember the difference in stopping distances, but what did it for me is that when braking from 50mph, by the time the car with summer tyres has passed where the car with winter tyres has stopped, it's still doing 20mph. I'd also argue that if you're keeping a car for a long time, the cost is offset by the fact your summer tyres will last longer because you won't be using them in the winter.

I don't believe that I've ever suffered from having summer tyres on during the winter, but then I've never had a small child run out in front of my either.....

I won't be fitting winter tyres to my 944 as it rarely comes out of the garage during the winter, except for the odd few miles every now and then to prevent issues with it sitting too long.

If you need convincing try driving 997 S up the alps on snow on summer tyres like I did. Had to put chains on even with a light covering.

Drove the winter clad Panamera up a snow covered alp at a decent speed on full snow without chains and it even changed direction as and when I asked no loss of traction unless being silly and stopping distance massively reduced.

Biggest difference is on cold (under 7c) , wet roads and this is something we live with in this country for a couple of months every year at least.
