late 996 tip v's manual
What are the tiptronic boxes like? Do they change up quickly or are they just like an automatic? Also how reliable are they? Those paddle shift conversion steering wheels look very nice.

Re: late 996 trip v's manual
Now there's a can of worms to be opened...
Firstly, auto haters will always hate: it's their job. They'll whine about lack of driver involvement, loss of a primary control, a feeling of disconnection from the car and a fear of becoming homosexual if they step within 50 feet of a tiptronic Porsche.
Back in the real world, be aware that the tiptronic 'box is a fairly basic torque converter auto. There's nothing clever (engineering wise) about it and is generally considered to be very reliable. A PDK it is not, not by a long way. The best piece of advice I can give re the tip' gearbox is to be warned that it can take a good while to learn how to get the best from them. A ten minute test drive will tell you very little from an enthusiastic driving point of view. If you are prepared to read the owners manual and learn what the 'box can do and how it will adapt to both driving style and the speed with which you depress the accelerator they can be quite rewarding - certainly better than the auto 'box in a late model Volvo estate car I drove recently.
The tip' is also good if you're stuck in traffic a lot, too!

Another point is that they are semi-intelligent. They "learn" a pattern of driving. A Fluid change & re-adaption by someone with a PWIS makes a huge difference. The Boxster was night & day after having this done.

Ahhhh. but then nothing beats dropping manual in to third and feeling the full force 70 to xxx
And learning to change quick enough out of first before it hits the limiter.

The Porsche workshop "computer" It enables scanning of faults, the ability to cycle things for diagnostics & the clearing of faults. Generally owned by decent indies & obviously Porsche Centres (OPC)HUBBA.HUBBA wrote:What's PWIS?tr7v8 wrote:Another point is that they are semi-intelligent. They "learn" a pattern of driving. Re: late 996 tip v's manual
Tiptronic boxes in the 996 turbo are extremely hard wearing, I think they are Merc units and can last hundreds of thousands of miles. OPC told me of a fellow customer has one that has done 300k miles, a lot of which has been racing miles on the track and combination of the Metzger and the tiptronic has meant his engine and gearbox have never skipped a beat.
It makes me want a metzger/tiptronic car but recent price hikes leave me cynical on values and asking prices, plus the fact I love my C2.
