Tyres for 944 15" Fuchs

Post by madrob6 »

My 944 is going to need some new tyres as the ones on it at the moment will be shot after standing still and flat for the last 8 years.

Problem is I don't have access to the car right now but want to do some research into tyres (prices, makes etc.) so can somebody tell me what size tyres they need and any recommendations on which ones to go for?

Thanks.

Fuchs rims should be 7" front, 8" rear. Tyre size for both is 215/60/R15, you'll need at least a V speed rating (up to 149mph). Choice is getting limited. Pirelli do a P6000 in this size which is N1 spec (Porsche approved, although how relevant this is now is extensively debated) - but the P6000 is almost universally loathed. I've run them in N1 guise on my Lux and cooking flavour on my wife's Merc (196bhp) and never had a problem with them. Otherwise, you pays your money etc.

Have a look on black circles.com They have Goodyears eagles & Yokohama's in stock. Both good tyres. But not cheap. :)

I understood those to be 'winter spec'. 195/65/R15 is correct according to my owners manuel, although there's very little in it in terms of sidewall height..

I'll do another search for that size, I swear it has 195 somethings on it at the moment.

215/60/R15s were a bit much at £80 a tyre. More expensive than tyres for the 18" wheels on my VW.

ETA: That's a bit better, Goodyear Eagle NCT5 for £37.21, slight improvement on £80

Do you have 7" front and 8" rear 15" Fuchs? (Standard cookie cutters or phone dials are 7" front and rear, I think.) I'm reasonably convinced that 215/60/R15 is the correct size for both 7" front and 8" rear Fuchs (which were an option).

Yes I'm sure. Just checked. Yoko A drives & Eagles in stock. You can get cheaper but they don't last as long. Also they don't grip & on those sizes the grip is a bit marginal in the wet. They also list Falken 912s but they are only H rated. Cheap at £50 & good but the H rating may upset your insurance company if they inspect. £70 for a V rated tyre isn't bad.

Just looked at a picture I took of my wheel and the only character I can make out on the tyre is R15 and H, cheapskate previous owner :P

ETA: Dug out the larger version of that image and I can just about make out 195/65/R15 H. That's one of the front tyres.

Be careful - just looked at the specs for a couple of 195/65/R15 tyres and they state rim size 5.5" -> 7", which will be no good if you have 8" rear Fuchs (probably why 215/60/R15 is the correct size for Fuchs  )

ETA Ah, but you is a VDubber, so probably like the 'stretched' look, no?

Nope I hate the stretched look, it's s**t! Running 225/40/18 on one with 235/45/17 on the other (but that one is still on the oe tyres).

How about 195 front 215 rear?

Later cars went to 205/55/R16 front, 225/50/R16 rear. Even later ones went to 225/50/R16 front, 245/45/R16 rear. So there's certainly prior art in different widths front to rear...

Had a look at the tyres on the car now I have it and it's currently got 215/60/R15 on the rear and 195/65/R15 on the front.

Fronts are currently only H-spec but I don't trust them as they are so old anyway so I'll be fine keeping it with the sizes the same as they are now?

195/65/15 on the front and 215/60/15 on the rear.
Exactly the same as my Revolution splits which are also 7" and 8".
I have just bought some 225/55/15 for the rear and will be swapping the 215/60/15 to the front.
I'll let you know what they are like as they might be a bit big!

Sounds good to me, wanted to put 195 on the front due to the price of the 215s

Still better than the Pirelli P-Zeros on the Passat, 235/45/17 for £140 on blackcircles, ouch.
