Left the 968 sleeping at home today getting some rest after the 1300 miles or so to Le Mans..... Took the Rothmans to the 924OC spanner and sponge day.....

Brill to meet some great people today and put faces to avatars and user names Thank you to Pete and Rachel for your hospitality and multiple pork barms and home made biscuits!

My new side indicators arrived so they went on in a couple of clicks - I know Martin they're not original but I do really like the oval ones better than the square



Then I swapped out the old LED's that have only lasted a year before water ingress destroyed one of them:



so this time round I used a silicone sealant around the rubber gasket to seal the lamp internals:



and they look much better already:







Then I installed the LED's for the reversing lights that Martin so kindly found for us all - what a difference in the 968:



But not so in the 924:



The rest of the weekend was a fight with the Jag's rear discs and a faulty ABS sensor causing multiple failures and fault codes on the Diagnostics... £31 later, the part should be here this week.

New belts finally fitted over the weekend after a bolt fell into them a few weeks back (holidays have got in the way)... water pump felt good but all idlers and tensioner pulleys were shocking, so replacements all round:


(tensioners are the old ones - new ones were already on the car!)

Also had to make my own 27mm thin spanner from a sheet of ali - far better than paying £25 and waiting a week! Looks crap, but gets the job done.


The difference in profile between the Conti balance belt I removed and the Gates I fitted was surprising:

Engine is SO much quieter with the new belts and pulleys. It also seems to idle a lot smoother than I remember... probably just because it sounds sweeter. The old conti balance belt was also over tight so I suspect that was the main offender... unfortunately means I can't really comment on the difference the tooth profiles make though.

All in about £170 for Gates belts and INA pulleys, then £30 for the flywheel lock but I like buying/hoarding tools

Just put some new speakers in the front and ordered some mats, plastic carpet covers for near the doors and now trying to decide how to make the speaker covers fit over the protruding tweeter in the speakers. Great sound so worth the messing about.

MOT passed on Saturday. One brake pipe required which tbh was absolutely fine but the twonk had advisoried it last year so kept himself busy by failing it this year.............he also kindly advisoried 2 other brake pipes that are fine which will allow him to fail it next year without actually putting it on a ramp............the best yet though is advisory 3 which says "Child seat fitted in passenger seat so unable to test passenger seat belt". Would have been ridiculously time consuming to unbuckle it and do the check.

I think next year I will take it elsewhere as I'm fed up replacing perfectly good brake pipes on his say so.

I get the "Child seat fitted in passenger seat so unable to test passenger seat belt" every year on my Passat. Lazy gits in garages always advisory it rather than unbuckle, test and reattach. I seriously don't understand their issue. Not like you're paying over the odds for their time is it...

Yeah they are a very non helpful lot in general MOT testers. Power tripped out their nuts. Having a decent one to use would be nice. This clown is only 2 minutes from my house and the only tester in the village. Must make some inquiries for next year for a decent one in the Renfrewshire area.

That's a shame as the place I go to are really good. They tell you things they spot that are nothing to do with the MOT, then show you what they're on about on the car. The best thing is that they ONLY do MOTs i.e. they have no facilities to do repairs. That way, I know for certain that they're not trying to fleece me.

Yeah that sounds good Bryan. This garage does do repairs but I don't give them any work as either myself or my mechanic friend attends to that. So its not like they make money failing it, instead actually more work for the free re-test. MOT testing is all a matter of interpretation and opinion and unfortunately no 2 testers are the same. I just think this guy is too picky for his own good.

In saying that I have never felt the love for MOT testers in general which harks back to my younger days of driving things I probably couldn't really afford and pro-active maintenance was never really involved. More like if it fell off then try and re-attach any way you can!!

I suppose its now that I have a well maintained, but old, car, this continues to irk me as I know my car is in very good order and replacing a perfectly good original pipe that has lasted 28 years and is still fine is something I consider infuriating.

My MoT guys are spot on here in High Lane, they know I do my own repairs where I can and they're proper old school engineers that appreciate the car as a classic.

I just fettled the lights on the 924 today putting Night Breakers in the headlights and sorting my interior light for something a touch different which is brilliant now!

Everything as it should be and mixture bang on after setting it by ear during the headgasket change.

Ready for Silverstone Classic

Took a closer look at these rotten old things last week and decided they needed to go.... they're broken and have been taped up to repair which isn't a good look on any car!



So on the back of that these arrived over the weekend cheap at £2.89 from fleabay...



Fitted quite easily although did battle with the PO wiring which needed tidying up. Nice look and bright enough as well. Really pleased with the result
