N1/2/3/4

Post by Tallguy »

I will need some new tyres for my Boxster shortly. I've had a ring around today and in the size I want 265/40/ZR18 101Y N3 have come in some various options. Some are N1, others N3 or N4 - what's the difference between the 'N' ratings?

When they are tested they start as a timeline, so will be N0 when first approved, then N1 etc.
My Boxster has none-N rated fronts & N rated rears. Not sure I'll carry on with N rated on a 986. It isn't an Insurance requirement all they are concerned about is speed rating & the correct sizing.

If your car is covered by a Porsche warranty you'll need 4 matching tyres all with the same N rating. As already stated N0 would be an early version of a given tyre followed by N1, N2 etc. If your car is free of the official network put whatever you like on it (within reason ;-) )

I've got Michelin Pilot Sport 2's with N3 rating all round and I'm free of any OPC requirements so I've ordered the MIchelin N4's today but there seems to be a supply problem so I'll know when they are arriving tomorrow lunchtime. Looks like I may be going to Coventry in the Mondeo :-(

Is this for real? Tyres and the N rating affect warranty?

Yup if you have Porsche warranty then all the tyres have to be same make & same N number. When my Boxster was serviced they noted that the fronts were non-N. Same make though.

Well in that case I'd have to try and find some N3 Michelin's (which I believe are discontinued) or replace all 4 tyres - my fronts have 4mm left on them!!

Thankfully I don't have to worry about that, but oh the shame of arriving in the Mondeo on Sunday..... :-)

I'm not making it up! This has been the subject of many an internet discussion for a long time.

Thanks I'm not suggesting you made it up, I can well believe it of Porsche but it astounds me all the same. I can't imagine it has any basis in law but luckily for them none of us that have the warranty will have deep enough pockets to fight them so we'll have to live with it!

So, what other stupidity on other bits of the car apply in this way then? I had the car washed the other day but I don't believe they bought the water from OPC Reading :D

Have to have a (inferior) Porsche Battery can't use Bosch Silver. No after market stereo or Parrot BT handsfree amongst others.

My 996 battery went and I replaced with Bosch Silver, as you say much better. I ran that car without warranty for 5 years, only have one on this car because it was in the purchase package, should have just got them just to discount it by that much I reckon!

A little off topic, but my 997 is being serviced at the moment by an OPC purely because of the outstanding Porsche warranty. If there was no 'approved used' warranty on it, it would be at Jasmine.

Paul - my earlier reply wasn't meant to sound fecetious (sp?). Apologies if it did!

'Course Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres were launched on Porsche 997s, yet they still aren't N approved...

My Boxster is serviced at an OPC because the deal is better than local indies, lower labour rate, use my oil etc.

Richard no problem didn't take out that way!

I'm taking mine to an Opc for service next month, in fairness the menu pricing is reasonable.
