I've never driven a 944 before and have only done about 10 miles in my new car due to the sill work I've had done. Is the transmission supposed to be this noisy? There is a whine from the rear when I accelerate, the whine goes when I come of the gas slightly but a louder whine when I come of the gas altogether?

Its not a really loud whine, just a bit annoying. Lack of oil, lack of use, driveshafts?

Sounds like the characteristic whine they all make.

Might be worth changing the oil (supposed to be done every 4years/48k) but you'll need a deep male hex socket, something like 17mm iirc, and also a means of getting the new oil in e.g. syringe or hand-pump.

It's on the list to do mine, hopefully this year.

bit of hoze pipe over the left wheel is what most people use to get the oil in, obviously the wife has to hold it...

Worth going to Swepco as well, quietened mine down a bit, improved the shift 1000%.

Most get if from Bert at Berlyn.

They call it Character. You can only hear it in mine with the windows shut. Open a window & it's gone. I really like it. Swepco is the stuff! May be that my exhaust is so loud I can hardly hear it

I can't hear a whine from either of mine. Maybe I'm used to it having only driven 944's for 8 years :?

If you change the oil yourself, make sure you can undo the fill plug before you undo the drain plug and empty your gearbox of oil. Mine is changed every two years, it maybe overkill but I prefer to pay extra for oil than a gearbox rebuild :o

Stick some Swepco 201 in it, it's great stuff

not that expensive either, i got mine from Berlyn services

worth a try, cheaper than a new box.

Thanks.

By the looks of it it's quite a common problem on a lot of 944s. I've looked back through the forum history and there are quite a few threads about noisy boxes.

Think I'll try the 201 and see what happens.
