So what is it about the 944 over other porkers that you like so much?
I love all Porsche. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Over the last 25 years I have worked on every model of Porsche, from high power high tech (sometimes) 917's, GT1's, 959's, GT2's through all the other models down to 356's at the low tech/low power end of the scale. Was factory trained on 944's and the tail end of 924's, 911 3.2 Carreras, 3.3 Turbo's and 928's, have worked on every model since and find myself today solving faults in 991's and Panameras that the main dealers can't solve.
But since I have been back in the UK from the middle east since 2002 I managed to get get a name for 944's because no one else seemed to fully understand them, to the point that about 10 years ago I had more 944's in my workshop at any one time than any other Porsche... Today though, you are more likely to see 996, 997, Boxster or Cayenne's at the workshop, but I find there is more people with problems with 944's online than any other model, so you will often find me helping you guys out, so on the surface it may seem like I am just a 944 boffin, but in reality I am just as at home with any Porsche model.
On a personal level, a black 944 lux was the first car I was trained on and I watched every step of that car being built, so deep down, I smile whenever I see a 944 and that may be why I own far too many of them. So in the future, I will eventually get down to just owning one or two, but in the meantime I keep having problems resisting the odd one which turns up.
What would I say is great about 944's? A great deal, good weight distribution, excellent design, over engineered in so many ways, very safe in a crash and the potential to out perform a super car, what more could you ask for?
Its nice at last to see their values rising and hopefully a time where they will be truly respected.
