In all seriousness I would not worry about the surface cracks, just an artefact of the cooling of the cast alu when they are made.

That looks like excellent work - any tips for dropping the rear axle?

I am getting ready to drop it, clean it up and install some polybushes and new rear shocks.

My only tip for getting the rear beam out is to pop into a workshop first with a 3/4 inch impact gun and a big air supply to undo the two main rear beam mounts in the ends of the sills, and then do them up again for you... the bolts have a habit of seizing into the metal sleeves within the bushes, which then mean you can twist the bolt but not undo it.

Use of a seriously heavy duty 3/4 inch impact gun causes that much quick impact torque in pulses, along with vibration, which loosen the bolt from the metal sleeve.

Other than that, disconnect the brake line, undo the shocks and the upper mounts for the beam and it will be off in no time... its those two big bolts into the beam end bushes that are the pain.. mark my words... one in ten rear beams is a nightmare even for us, 8 out of 10 are just a pain, one out of ten are easy... all the problem ones are with those bolts into the main two bushes.

ken, where did u get the torque tube bearings? my tube is going off for blasting and powdercoating soon, so will be rebuilding at the same time. .

Nick the bearings are from the USA they are ridiculously expensive :( ......google 944 super bearings

you can get replacements in the UK but they should be C5 clearance, best I could get in the UK was C3....I considered it worth spending the extra as I never want to do this job ever again, the problem is the fit to the shaft needs to be loose enough to get the drive shaft installed but tight enough to insure the bearing turns not the shaft......

I have a friend with a near perfect set of OEM bearings for sale with good carriers I'm sure you could get these for £20-30....I almost had them :D

Handy advice thanks, have been soaking all the nuts and bolts with penetrate and release. my dad has a fairly hefty compressor and impact toys so will pop over and try to release it.

Ok ken will search for those super bearings. But tbh I would be very interested in your friends set of oem bearings.

As Jon said the two main bolts at the rear of the sills are the difficult ones. The s2 I stripped was a right pain. Both were seized solid! My turbo is actually being very kind to me! Both came out with ease! It literally took 1 hour to drop the complete rear end including the torque tube and gearbox!

Thats the one.

The only problem comes when some moron has had it out in the past and put it back in the wrong way round, which I would not have thought was even possible, but I have seen it done a couple of times, which then means you can only get the impact gun on the nut, not the bolt and therefore can't use this technique.

Well they seem to the be the right way round at least! Although the nut appears to be disintegrating, not sure if that will make remove easier or not!! Oh well time will tell.

Fitted a Dansk sport exhaust to the 944.

Was a bit of a blighter to get on due to odd hangers etc but its there now, secure and sounds mighty fruity.

Completely changes the nature of the car.

Car running well now or so I thought, on the way to work started a splashy misfire and very lumpy idle. Would run reasonable on a bit of throttle so popped the bonnet and had a look. Sounds weak to me, where to start? Then noticed a vacuum pipe on the intake plenum with nothing on it, stuck my finger over the hole, idle steady. I found a blank in my never-throw-anything parts box, problem sorted. But what is supposed to be there?
Its a Ann Hathaway moment.

It is much louder for a start with more of a 'burble' going on at low revs. At the very top is sounds like a jet engine and I love it!

I also had a few other things done at the same time which add to the feeling. Nothing major, taking the slack out of the throttle cable, fuel filter etc. It now feels much more 'urgent' which is nice.

The only downside is that it is a bit more of an affair to drive being louder, and it is my daily driver so wonder how that will work out long term. For now though I'm very happy.

I got it from Eurocarparts using the discount code 'LASTCHANCE30' for about £145 delivered. Was very happy with that.
