If you're medium maintenance like you mention, should it not be 50p? :D

It doesn't work the other way around :tongue3: minimum effort for maximum return, that's what it's all about I realise now, as I haven't got anything left to give anyway! lol

God this thread is going off on a tangent...

mmmm I've got my ultimate turbo, sparkly lushious maraschino red, cream and black leather interior, 250bhp, nice big wheels, great handling..I don't think I would change anything on it, other than to replace what needs replacing, maybe get some decent braided brake lines and update the fuel pipe system, maybe put some stickers on it...oh and I'm planning to paint the spoiler with some black metallic flake  :0)..what's yours?

Black metallic flake, should look good with yr cars colour. Is that on a bridge spoiler I take it?
Mine? Well I'd love to stick a set of cup 1's on mine but love tele-dials so that may never happen! Other than that need to paint the sills body colour at some point and trying to resist the temptation of tuning. Grin factor is currently sufficient to keep those thoughts at bay though! :D

You won't manage it Andy! :D I had mine "standard" albeit with a MAF, for a good 2 years before I started to tinker. By chance a set of Promax chips came up, then a 3 bar FPR came along. On installing the Promax chips we noticed that the car was already chipped, running a superchips set up on the standard 2.5bar reg, was already running 17psi with a bleed valve, no wonder it went off the scale on the dash boost guage!!

After that the need to hold full boost to the red line meant a DPW was needed, then some nice AFR and boost gauges, then an engine and turbo rebuild...........the list goes on.

Anyway, you won't manage it if you keep the car for a while. Lol

You would not believe the amount of will power it takes to keep my 86 white car standard. For years I have been maintaining it as a tip top standard car so I can show customers what an original well sorted one drives like, to highlight what I am explaining about issues with their car... it has low miles (about 80k now I think) but the temptation is massive to put in a 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 or 3.4 engine into it... but I resist.

The car is not even chipped, standard turbo, standard wastegate, 220 bhp version, no M030, no LSD and no ABS... exciting because it has no LSD and no ABS which is always in the back of my mind... not massive power but it has its own hard core edge not having LSD or ABS.

At the moment I am toying with the idea of fitting Koni inserts and 968 M030 anti roll bars... but I know all too well that this could be the slippery slope.

So I have mad projects like the 968 Turbo RS and 944 Turbo cup car to scratch my modification tendancies, because there is nothing as fun as a 300, 350, 400 or 450 bhp car with 400+ ft lbs of torque.

You're right Stuart, if I wait two years I'll be doing well! The only thing holding me back is that I'm a bit of a standard/OEM geek! :D

Coming from an S2 before buying the turbo I find standard 944 turbos to be only good to remind me how poor the std design was in terms of engine behaviour and power delivery.

Porsche focused on mid range performance by using a restrictive turbine, 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds and long runners for the intake manifold. Throttle response was properly poor because of the barn-door AFM, and they made it even worse by fitting a tiny butterfly so that the car could be driven by the average careless driver.
Fuel efficiency was another point of focus, hence the gearbox with a very tall crown & pinion.
While they were considered a triumph in docility when they came out many from the 911 fan boy crowd decided to call it dullness and have been grinding that axe ever since.

With that said, a good upgrade to a standard/unmolested car that should nicely improve its enjoyability without being too detrimental to its originality would be to fit a 944 S2 gearbox. Its shorter crown & pinion should help the standard engine feel a bit less sluggish than it actually is.

And so am I Andy, my car looks absolutely standard but goes a heck of of a lot better. Under the bonnet only a strut brace and the outline of the MAF give anything away, exterior is as Porsche intended bar the lowering. That's just the way I like it!

I have simply removed the "restrictive" engineering to make the car the way it always should have been if it weren't for protecting beetle sales. Barn door check, wastegate check, cycling valve check etc. Bosch got 294 bhp out the original tune for the 220 turbo before it got reverse engineered therefore I feel driving one with any less than 294 bhp leaves you somewhat cheated!

I love the tall gearing on the 944 turbo, especially being able to walk away from Scoobies. Evo's and Cosworths when they run out of gears at about 140mph (On a private test track of course)

Having said that, the S2 transaxle in a 944 turbo would make perfect sense to 90% of 944 turbo owners.

The standard 944 turbo was really crippled by the factory, there are so many obviously "designed in" blocks to tuning, it is just fortunate that over the years they have pretty much all been overcome in the aftermarket.

As a standard car, I love them, as a tuned car they are absolutely the best thing since sliced bread... What other 25 year old car with 100,000+ miles on the clock can be tuned to 420 bhp with bolt on modifications and then continue to run without fault for years?

The thing that really always impresses me is that over the last 25 years of working on 944 turbo's, I am still yet to replace an engine or turbo due to wear. Scored bores (often due to a bearing, turbo or airbox failure) yes, or turbo failures (normally due to airbox failure) yes.. but never wear.

We have the head off of a 944 S2 here at the moment for a head gasket replacement, the car has covered 280,000 miles, the current owner has owned it since it was at 10,000 miles and there are no signs of wear on the bores at all.. No top ridge, no ovality, increase in bore size beyond new spec... Absolutely amazing... the turbo's are often the same.
