What did you do to your air cooled 911 today?

Following the success of a thread I started in the 924/944/968 section a while ago, where people could post minor updates to what they have been up to or have been doing to their Porsche recently, I thought I would start the same thread here to encourage some more activity in the section.

Come on chaps, I know we have some members who use the forum with air cooled Porsche, don't be shy, get talking! (yes that includes you Sam!)

I will get the ball rolling...

Some of you know I managed to pick up an early 80's 911 Turbo recently in need of some paintwork and minor restoration recently. The car had been known to me and looked after by my business for the last 5 or 6 years, so I knew it is a good car.

Anyway, today I managed to secure a new whale tail spoiler frame and rubber for it at a reasonable price (normally £500+ just for the rubber section) so I am a step closer to being able to book it into the bodyshop for a repaint. But toying with the idea of removing the engine and transmission for a service rebuild while its bodywork is being tidied up.. Also considering removing the suspension and brakes at the same time so when it is finished, it will be as new..

I also own a LHD 964 Carbiolet which has been in my collection for about 5 years, which to be honest, I have never known what to do with.. But I am now thinking of building a custom 3.6 Turbo engine for it and converting it to wide turbo body, as well as possibly, just possibly also properly converting it to a speedster at the same time.

Over the last 25 years of my career we have converted 3.2 carreras and 964's to speedsters using the original Porsche parts, in the original Porsche factory methods. We have also converted various air cooled 911's into wide turbo look bodies using the original factory panels. And of course we are known for building some wild Turbo engines such as the 3.6 and 3.8 turbo's.. But.. Never all to the same car.. A big project... But why not turn one unused 964 C2 cab into a turbo body, 964 speedster turbo?? Could be fun and one hell of a looker.

Sounds interesting Jon, but as for today, just fed up watching the rain pee down!! will give you/Mark a call soon re the 20th.By the way. :)

Hi Jon,your ideas for your project sound brilliant,although possibly somewhat costly i would think but the finished article will be great,i have today for an hour or so been measuring up for a piece of stainless steel to go in the bonnet in front of the heater fan and other nasties,it will consist of a almost flat section and shaped where neccessary and with large holes in it spaced across the whole length,these holes will then have gently swaged edges to them for a nice professional finish,hopefully making a nice clean look to this sometimes grubby corner to a car,i will post finished pics when all is complete.

That is looking like one of the cleanest front luggage covers I have seen since the 80's! and your stainless steel closure section sounds like a much better option than the original reconstituted cardboard they left the factory with :)

Yes, my two 911 projects will be reasonably expensive over the coming months, but after some reflection recently, I decided that life is too short and it has been years since the lads in the workshop and I had a decent project to sink our teeth into.

Since the start of the credit crunch we have had several customers project cars, but each time so many choices have been compromised by the customers budget which can be so soul destroying when the car falls short of its potential.. So its time some of my own collection become all they can be.

Do any of you other 911 air cooled people do anything to your cars?,seems like a very quiet subject!,come on,even if you have just given it a winter spruce up,picture even!!let's see some of those brilliant air cooled beauties that i know are out there.

I managed to pick up a bargain from Porscheapart for my 930 turbo. A genuine whale tail spoiler for a 911 turbo, with rubber section for £150.. Mine was a tad scorched.

Porsche wanted over £500 just for the rubber section, and about the same for the frame and grills.. Bit of a result to find the one I bought.

Just wait for it to turn up now so I can get it painted (along with the rest of the car which desperately needs a repaint)

Jon,sounds like a real bargain!now we all need to see some pics............928 sounds like it needs some serious love though!!!!.a brave man needed to take on that.

Nothing to exciting to report, took the 911 for a run today, first time for over a month, but have a good excuse as just had a conservatory built so have been fitting skirting boards, laminate flooring and decorating it, then the rest of the house looks tatty against the new paint and so the saga continues ... anyway weather looked ok so went for a hoon, started first time without being on the battery conditioner which is better thah the 944 ever did, only did about 60 miles or so, but came back with a grin so alls well, then cleaned the paintwork and the wheels, its amazing how much brake dust accumulates, now must get it serviced before the winter

Not that far off though!what have you done to your car in the mods department?it seems to sit very nicely and that colour ...fantastic on that car.
