first off, hello everyone :D

I'm now in a position where I can afford to buy a car i've always wanted - the 911 996.
looking for a few pointers, obviously the whole engine failure issues with early 996 are well publicised, I have been looking at cars around 99 / 00. budget at the moment is 11k and there are a few lovely cars out there, just need to be careful that i dont buy a pup needing another 6k spent on it.

The car will be mostly used for weekends and the odd car show, still undecided as to go for a 4s or a 2s.
Am I best looking out for a car thats had an engine rebuild or replacement or is it a case of 'you might be lucky'

:?:

looking at this one in particular http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3945970.htm

OK Firstly Hi & welcome

That looks quite nice, few alarm bells about the Ireland bit, Southern Ireland used to be a way of getting around Cat C & D markers at one point. It says service history, would be good if we knew who from.

My very personal opinion on M96 engine issues, based on MY research. Older cars could do with heavier oil, thicker than an OPC would use. Cars used harder reputedly have less problems. Unfortunately unless you don't value your licence this is bl00dy difficult in a Tip. My Boxster as it winds up in 3rd is doing a fair bit more than the legal limit, <cough>allegedly<cough>.... Typical Tip change points are 3k or so. Short journey's are meant to be a no no as well.

Not enough information really to give you a steer.

Price is about right and they look good in the GT3 kit, lots around for this sort of money.

Hi and welcome. :hello2:

Where are you, this might help someone with local knowledge show you their car? Try going to a local TIPEC meeting and see a few there. The advice I was given when buying any of my Porsches was "buy your car based on three things, condition, history and condition". Go and see a few local ones for sale, even if they are sheds, it'll give you a feel for the cars that are out there. :)

Many thanks for the replies. i am based just outside Edinburgh, I have had another response from the seller, he has added that the service history is full and was purchased from a dealer. I will ask for a bit more information :bounce:

Just be really careful and have the car inspected if you can.

There are some people in Ireland I could point you towards for this.

As already said, there are a lot of 996 on the market for around this amount of cash, you are also in a good position to cash in on some of the bargain cars which turn up in the North that I always wish I was closer to.

I quite agree Jon, but it is the pigeon droppings & whippet hairs inside that always put me off, added to the coal dust in the boot

Viewed this car today, was quite nice. Got to see all the history, its had an independent engineers report too. Although it was nice I'm going to keep looking, I'll maybe have another look next week. I'm in no hurry at the mo.

Peter Morgan has an agent in Falkirk. The garage is SP Auotbahn. He will inspect a private car for you, if you find one you like. :D
