How doe it compare insurance wise with the 944? Obviously not as old for that purpose..

Horrific!!!! My wallet is still in ICU on oxygen. The cheapest I could get is £750. The 944 was £126ish.
This is for 54 year old with one SP30 & wife 53 with one SP30, no accidents etc. Second car & 3K per annum.

Hiya Jim, have you tried classicline insurance they insured my Boxster 2.5 (S reg) for £900 fully comp. Now I know that sounds horrendous but I wrote a 944S off 2 years ago and have only had a car license for 6 years (was a biker for 20 years but counts for nothing) and I'm 39. All the other quotes I was getting were around the £1500 mark! Oh and I live in Manchester!!!

If you do make sure they take the monthly payments, they did not take any from me for about six months.

I guess £750 may not be too bad, but I certainly wouldn't want to pay more. Back in 80's I was paying around £900+ with all the bonuses for the 944. There was obviously a lot more on the road then but there were so many Porsches getting written off and masses of claims. I used to go to Follets in St Johns Wood for service - you'd would get 3 or 4 write offs delivered there every day - 944's & 928's in roof jobs. That was just one dealer. Don't know how it is now..... Think there are less P's on the road, maybe to do with the tax restrictions on company cars nowadays.

I think there are a lot more Porsches on the road today overall. A lot of user chooser company car schemes or biggish car allowances like the co. I work for. Our works car park is a sea of BMW/Audi/Pork/Jags/Land Rovers & we run no company cars just car allowances.
It basically comes down to how much you pay for a "hobby" car.

O/T. Our RO has a Boxster and none of the club stuff fits in it. It's going to be interesting this summer passing the gazebo round members going to shows.

Been thinking about that! Luckily still a few 944/928s in our group. But traditionally I take chairs, table, cooker & fence posts in the 944 for Bromley!

Not sure about the "less Porsches on the road". I don't have figures but there must be hugely more Porsches on UK roads now than in the 1980s. Back then they still turned heads and attracted comments in London where I lived, and inside ad agencies where I worked (I remember two of my colleagues had 928s). With the front-engine cars Porsche were successful in attracting the non-enthusiast driver the 911 struggled to capture up till the phenomenally successful 996, Boxster and beyond. Half the marque's sles are Cayennes now too andthey are pretty common sight.

Does anyone have figures or number of new Porsches sold in UK now and historically?

Yes I remember when I was still at school in the 60s if I saw a Porsche it was something to tell your mates about :) but nowadays they are so common,so many in silver ,black and grey, :( but its still exciting to see an old one!Not sure what you mean about the non-enthusiast driver choosing a front engined Porsche over a 911. :? I can assure you that my 944 is driven VERY enthusiastcally! :D The 928 was of course designed to be a long distance GT car in the true sense of GT(grand tourer) whereas the 944 was more of a sports car and excels on country roads ,the handling being perfectly balanced for rapid changes in direction. It remains to be seen whether the Boxsters and 996/997 become classics in the same way that the front engined cars have especially as they have been built in larger numbers than Porsche ever have before.

944Bloke I didn't want to imply the front-engined aren't enthusiasts cars now! I know the 44s are fabulous driving cars. But when they were new, many 911 sales (I am not including city boys with red braces here) were to Porsche enthusiasts and driving enthusiasts who could forgive the challenging dynamics, odd ergonomics and compromises with things like noise, heating systems which came with air-cooled territory because when mastered the drive was so satisfying. By comparison the 924 and 944 and 928 especially brought in completely new buyers who would never have considered a 911. They were far more of a "normal" car to drive. A lot of these buyers were not interested much in cars or even in driving, but they were enormously attracted to the Porsche brand which shone a little more brightly in those days.

Of course now all the owners of the front drive Porsches are enthusiasts by definition!

Well it is home! Plenty of petrol near Duxford even if it was close to £1.48 a litre  Especially since it was bone dry & took £84.
First thoughts after 120miles or so down the M11 & into SE London then out & down the A2/M2?
Bloody quick, even just booting it, using the Tip controls it is ballistic & sounds nice. Could do with PSE if that is an option on a Boxster.
Lovely steering, ideally weighted & geared. Slight steering tremor at around 80 indicated, front wheel balance? Need to sort switches out, managed to get the spoiler up & couldn't work out how to put it down.

Has heaps of receipts & history including original bill of sale from Merlin Nottingham (Now OPC Notts ?) for £53K! Which is £11K worth of options. I need to sort the pile out. More pics tomorrow.
