My car whines a bit when decelerating with no throttle i.e. engine braking.

Also when I leave it in gear whilst transitioning from acceleration to deceleration there's a mechanical jolt, like something taking up slack in the drivetrain.

Is any of this reason for concern, or just lovely old-skool nuts and bolts engineering?

The diff does whine a bit, I replaced the oil in mine and it did quieten down somewhat. The procedure is really easy and is worth doing. Can't offer advice with the mechanical jolt though.

The jolt you describe was similar to mine when the rubber doughnut in the clutch was wearing out and the whine could be the release bearing. But hopefully, it could just be wear in the driveshafts and as mentioned the transaxle does whine a bit at this age.

I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch is wearing out. It's still on the original at 151k

The clutch housing has an inspection hole which should have a rubber plug, but likely hasn't, if the rubber is breaking up you should be able to find small bits of the black stuff.

My '83 car was still on it original clutch at 160-K and this still had lots of life in it - still sitting on a shelf in the garage .

This might be way off but aren't there some pinion bearings in the diff which as they wear cause the synchro to be every do slightly off, hence the whine under load - mine has this as well though I'm hoping an oil change will lessen it.

I think a transaxle oil change will be a good idea at some point soon-ish.
