well I'm 41, residence carpark (no garage) 6 years no claims and one sp30, and asking quote for a stock '89 S4... So I feel a bit miffed that I should have to pay more than £350-400 tops, I might try swift cover!!!

Lightning do you remeber the reg. of your old car so I can try "normal" insurance providers online, I may get a pleasant surprise you never know. Will try a few other insurers tomorrow and if doesn't get better I may give up on it. Looks like a really nice car with all the troublesome bits done so I'd hate to miss it even if I don't keep it for long (i never seem to keep anything for long... there's always something else I haven't had yet!!!) Actually I've got to the stage where I've pretty much had everything I've ever had an interest in and now coming round to those I iether couldn't afford before or was too scared to try... If you remember Brett I think I met up with you about 3 years ago at that Army base near Emsworth at the drag racing, I didn't find a decent car that time. I doubt there'd be two nitrous equipped 928's in the south...

Hi :)

AH... I didnt realise who you were....yes we had a long chat about 928s :) :)

It was at Baker Barracks....

Get a 928..you will NEVER regret it and I doubt you will ever move on to anything else....

If you find one in the South (I am in Bournemouth) , I will happily come look at it for you...

All the best Brett :)

Swift Cover just quoted me over £400 for our Bug, I've been with them for 4 years. Told them to shove it and have gone with Endsleigh for £211.

The reg number was F887 VRL

I had it insured on a Classic policy with Footman James and it cost £250. The Ferrari I replaced it with was only £385 to insure.

But for that it has to be a second car. If you are using it as a daily driver/your only car the quote may well be a lot higher.

After the Ferrari I bought a Lotus Elise S2 and as it was only 6 years old it was too new for "Classic" insurance. However I eventually managed to get a "modern classic" policy (second car again) but it was still £700, and that was the cheapest as classic policies don't accrue NCB for some reason....so I was like starting from scratch with a car in group 20

However I do have agreed value on the policy, so if I total the Lotus at least I will get back what I paid for it.

The lotus Elise is easy to write off. Go off the road and damage the front end, even minor damage = new front clamshell. Hit the rear too = new rear clamshell.....the car is totalled due to repair costs

Any damage to the alloy chassis tub = write off
Say if you had an impact on the front or rear wheel/suspension and it tore the wishbone mounts off.

Yep lotuses, lotai, lotusususes? Are easy to write off, look up burning Esprit online, belonged to a friend of mine, went up with full tanks!!! Thanks Brett, may take you up on that. Finally got a reasonable quote so I may take a shot at lightnings' old 928, it's probably the one model you should never bid on blind but it seems to be a fairly known quantity (although no guarantees), with all the jobs done, other than needing cambelt ASAP. Just need to decide what to bid and wether or not to bid.

It has working aircon!

That has to be a good thing on a 928....I had it properly overhauled which included a new genuine Porsche condenser, a new dryer, and seals.
I then stripped out the dash and sorted out the HVAC as the distribution controls were very slow to operate. I replaced various valves including the small non-return valve under the air cleaner in the engine bay.
Also the temperature sensor was faulty on the dash so I replaced that too. It has a motor behind to suck air through the sensor, and it's a right sod to get at.
It's nice to hear that the aircon is still working two years later, after all the work I did on it.

when I bought the car it had clearly been "regassed for sale" as the aircon worked for about 2 weeks.

Just over an hour to go and I'm still umm-ing and arr-ing, Mainly because I haven't seen the car in the flesh... I think I'll wait till the last minute to see where the bidding gets to. I've decided to just insure her as a normal car for now, the classic car policies seem to have gone bananas with the 928 giving all sorts of restrictions inc. no cover to drive any other car, no commuting (not that I would be anyway), and a few others but I had stopped listening by then, and requesting things like previous performance car insurance certs. to be presented.(as it happens do still have the!!) but I basically told them to F***off and stop treating me like a new driver. With 7 years no claims I may just as well use a normal policy and have no restrictions and just enjoy the car. I tend to drive my cars alot anyway. I'll try a couple more tomorrow but if not I'm ready to pay £700 odd for the standard car policy. Now the choice, Porsche 928 or do I bid on that sporty Smart car...

Wow, £4100

Is that all a pristine 928 S4 with all the issues sorted and unmarked bodywork is worth at the moment?

What a bargain! I wish I'd had the money to bid.

I didn't bid much in the end, keeping back a fair bit incase of problems as I hadn't actually seen the car. I only bid just over 4000, keeping back 1500. If I had had a chance to go and look at her and drive her it would've been a different matter. Perhaps I should've bid just that little bit more and perhaps I might have if the reason for sale wasn't "trying to make space in the garage" I've never really considered that a valid excuse, not saying it isn't in this case, but just in general. Ofcourse that would depend if the other cars were also collectibles.... maybe it's because I don't have a garage myself I doubt I'd ever let that be the reason for getting rid of any vehicle. I tend to move on iether because I get bored or simply see something else on my list...

Guys can you take a look at this one; look at the picture of the rear of the car square on(main body of listing 7th row down on the left). Now look carefully at the rear bumper does it look like its had a bunp at some time? The reflections aren't smooth and the lines not quite even. It could just be a optical illusion but I don't really want to waste 5-6 hours going to see it if it looks like it's had a bump. I did ask the vendor and he said it's just the light.... what's your opinion?

well there are three rear shots, two at an angle, looking at the left side of the bumper in particular but the whole centre section just looks a bit off. Will probably go an take a look anyway.
