996 indicator problem

Post by v8rumbler »

Noticed a problem today--- when turning left the indicator does not cancel. When indicating right the indicator stalk does not stay up--- it needs to be held up-------
Any thoughts?

Looks like the whole assembly comes as one? Not sure if you can open it and sort out the springs and switches inside? My 944 opened and it was a real can of worms. I never got it to work again.

I think you need to phone OPC in the morning for a price. Once you've sat down, maybe DVB?

v8rumbler, I have exactly the same problem on a 996 turbo.

I found this great video:

But the thing seems to be a pain to replace (because airbag is involved), also the part is hard to get here in Russia.

Did you actually manage to solve this?

Breakers ! airbag should not be an issue, comes out of wheel centre as a unit, well it does on the 993, and early 96's at least, cos they are the same units.

Does sound like it needs a new stalk assembly.

Be very careful when removing the airbag, make sure the battery is off and has been off for a little while and make sure your not a big ball of static electricity, otherwise you could find yourself in A&E.

While the airbag is out, lay it face down away from you.

An airbag can be an explosive weapon that can seriously hurt you.

I was always curious, can airbag actually explode by itslef without power applied to its terminals?
Should it be handled with care like an explosive? If it were, it would just detonate whenever a door was slammed
(because in a 996 airbags are inside doors).

So, if power is removed from them, are we on the safe side?

Airbags can go off by themselves when being handled off the car, quite a few mechanics have been hurt by them.

Its not vibration that sets them off when taking them out, its usually static electricity, you have to handle them like any other explosive.
