Hi,just fitted the hardtop to my 996,going to use it as my daily driver & thought the heated screen would be useful over the next few months,problem is it's noisier than the soft top,squeaking, rattling & creaking,fitted it as manual said,is this normal? Any advice on fitting or what to do?

No experience of separate Hard Top but I occasionally have problems with rear hatch squeaking, my cure is a spray of silicon lubricant on the hatch hinges.
Might get rid of the squeaking where rubbing occurs but probably wont help with the creaking and rattling

Hi,had a good go with spray,creaking & squeaking gone,have to live with the rattling,soundslike something loose just over my head.

Have been advised not to get silicone spray anywhere near a Porsche, disolves something in the induction system can't remember the detail, but for sure it's out there somewhere

I use it regularly,its good stuff especially for wiper mechanisms,hinges etc. I admit Ive never sprayed it into the induction system but then.....you wouldnt anyway,would you?

probably not, but it may find its way there, if the engine is running whilst you were spraying just had a quick look , it appears that it can destroy O2 sensors

Thanks,engine was off & sprayed leading edge of roof so hopefully the two didn't meet!

When you take it off for the summer, it might be worth giving all the rubber a wipe with trim Detailer to stop it drying out whilst it's being stored.

Thanks,good idea.any one ever taken a hardtop apart?sounds like something has come astray just over my head & is clonking around.

Might be a daft suggestion but are these hard tops hollow mouldings? if so there may be a loose screw/nut in the cavity. you could get an assistant to use a strong magnet on the inside of the roof to see if you coan catch/locate the blighter, if you do you could perhaps drag it to the side where it may not rattle around. The question then arises how to get rid of it!
Perhaps with the hood off you could manipulate it like a 3d puzzle to get whatever is loose into a position where it wouldn't rattle.
Just a few silly thoughts as it would drive me nuts hearing that rattle over my head.

Sorry to go O/T, but is fitting/removing the hardtop a bit of a project? Is it a two person job & heavy and/or a straight forward gig?

I'm thinking of getting a 996 C4 cab with hardtop and weighing all possible scenarios before choosing if I should get one or not...

Silicone spray is bad anywhere near paint as if you need any paintwork done it is a huge PITA to remove.

Another few questions if you don't mind.

Does water find its way into the cabin through the canvas top when exposed to heavy rain for prolonged periods or when washing the car? Any signs I should be looking for before purchase?

When driving with the hardtop on what is the noise level like? Is it more noisy than a coupe?
