Hi,
Sorry to hear about the prolapsed disc, I know it's agony, you won't believe the difference after the op. Anyway, I had to go back to work after two months because I needed the money, but if you can take at least three that would be better.

All the best,

Andy.

Hi jameso,

As you say "if it ain't broke....... so I didn't do the rear main seal as is wasn't leaking (probably the only bit that doesn't) and looking round the internet I've about several people that wish they hadn't bothered as it ended leaking more afterwards.
Good luck putting it back together, it really is alot easier than taking it all apart, I hope you labelled all those bolts!
Hope the back gets better soon (I had a prolapse disc op a couple of years ago, absolute agony!).

All the best,

Andy

Rear seals normally go hard after 6-7 years & invariably leak. As for new ones leaking generally it'll be due to A.Scratching or cockling the seal edge when inserting it. B. the seal burning when first started, due to the lip being dry, grease or heavy oil on the seal cures this. C. If the seal isn't centred properly when installed, some manufacturers have a special tool for this, some work some don't!

Bare in mind that if the seal leaks over your shiny new clutch then the clutch is toast & you'll be doing it all again! :x BTDTGTTS

Jim, did you do the seal yourself? Is there a special tool that works?

I dont think for 1 minute rear seals start leaking after 6 years, they last a good few years longer than that.
The 944 rear main seal is a bit of a pain to remove and the biggest reason for leaks after fitting a new one is not tapping it all the way home - easily done as it sits lower than the surrounding flange.

I dont get why you wouldnt change it if changing the clutch - false economy for 15mins work.

Yup 6 years is a bit short, but I've seen them shatter like glass after a relatively short time (not many more years) especially if they get hot.
Leaks are very often because of the seal having worn a groove in the crank.

Hence the oil pump drive gear is replaceable never heard of that at the rear - may be the seals are softer??

I changed clutch assembly, rear main seal, clutch bolts, exhaust hardware/seals and spigot bearing. The parts came in easily below £500.
Are you sure it wasn't £1083. 38 for labour?
