I've seen a bit of this recently (very high/ridiculous prices on classic cars)

For instance I saw a MK1 Ford Escort Twin Cam last week advertised at a dealer for £65,000. and recently a Lotus Carlton for £50,000

I think it's a "lottery culture". These people are hoping that some guy who just won the lottery might snap it up "hey, I used to own one of these and this is "the best example you will find"
And there are plenty of lottery winners floating around.
If you just won, say, £7,000,000 then what's £65,000 to get the car of your dreams?

.., agree, crazy situation (emperors clothes) To think that a Mk1 Escort and just a basic one at that, can make more than my 928,s worth beggars belief. Don,t get me wrong I love the old Mk1 and 2 Escort, but are they worth that sort of money, definately NO !

Ford Cortina MK 5's are approaching £5,000 for the best ones now.

I say "best" in relative terms of course, as these were hardly inspiring when new. A dealer local to me has a Cortina MK 5 2000S up at £6995.

Have you ever driven a lotus cortina, or a twink escort mark one ? I have owned a mark 1 'A' bracket lotus cortina and a mark 1 twink plus a BDA mark 1 escort, if you had experienced these cars you would value them very highly in your motoring hall of fame , I know I do, and would pay lots of money to have them now. how many genuine mark one twinks do you think were built, I have not bothered to check, but for sure not many. One thing is for sure if they can get £50K for a lotus carlton, £65K is a steal for a twink :D

Yes I have driven a Lotus Cortina and a twin cam Escort and they were really exciting cars to drive. :) But £50-60 000? No way would I pay that for one, especially when I could get a decent 944 for around £3000-3500 which is what I did! :D guess what? I love my 944!!!!! :D :D Somebody else can buy those overpriced Fords!

I actually love the MK 1 Escort, although I've never driven a Twin Cam version. And I used to own a MK 5 Cortina 1.6L which was a great starter classic.

However these massive prices make me cross as it puts the cars out of reach of "normal" enthusiasts, and into the "rich man's garage" territory.

But I guess it's great news if you own one already!

Yes,agreed.I think there is a big market for the hot Fords in the classic rally scene but whether those prices are achievable.......I dont know. :?
