Hi all, I have not posted on the 928 section before as I am a 944 owner.
I have a 91 S2 and she has been nothing but shear pleasure. Servicing is a tad expensive but all in all a great low cost car that is fabulous to drive,
However one thing niggles me greatly.
I am meant to own a 928 I am sure of it.

I brought the 928 Essential Buyers Guide at X-mas and have not told the other half about it.

It's a serious option for me maybe this year if I am lucky, if not then next year.

Is there a general rule of thumb when looking and buying and any models to avoide like the plague?

I have seen lots of S4's for sale at around the £5-8K mark. The S4 seems like a decent model but I keep hearing scare stories of electrics (all from non 928 owners) is this true?

When the time comes I will have bide my time and get me hands on a manual model. I can't bare the thought of owning an automatic but I know these are rare in the 928 World.

Well hope to join the club some time soon. Might even try to sneak into a 928 meeting this year to have a prod around a couple of members cars if you would let me in?

I have never owned a 928, but have always wanted to, and I do know a couple of people who own them. The one thing that I WOULD Say to you is that if you think the 944 is expensive to service, wait until you see prices for the 928.... :shock:
(Particularly the S4)

Totally agree with previous post. A work colleague had to sell his 928 as he could not afford the upkeep when it came to belts & rollers time!
I budget for about £1000/year on upkeep on my 944 Turbo; perhaps a long standing 928 owner can enlighten you on the 928 costs especially if you don't do the spannering yourself.
I did consider a 928 but decided on a tweaked 944 Turbo giving me better bang for the bucks :) If you have set your heart on a 928 buy wisely and be prepared to budget for the outlay :shock:

Do join the club, £50 for 2 years I believe, very good value, its a no brainer especially when it comes to insurance info & discount + a font of helpful knowledge.

Hi :)

928s are no more expensive to service than a 944 really.... if you need the Cambelt done with Waterpump etc budget around £500 from Paul Anderson in Stroud....and a cambelt is only every 4 years.... an engine service is a couple of gallons of oil, oil filter, air filter fuel filter and 8 plugs....maybe a dizzy cap and rotor arm every 2/3 years...

They are a truly stunning car to own, they give a sense of occasion every time you drive them, the only real downside is petrol costs at between 14 and around 20 mpg (town or run)

Electrics... they are a pain in the butt but easy to fix.... the trick is when you buy it to make sure EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING ELECTRICAL works... windows, boot release, seats etc etc..... when something electrical goes it never stops you driving its just a pain sometimes...

Now for my famous saying...when I go out every morning (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life it puts a smile on my face all day...

Hi folks! A 928 against a 944 to run? Hello - rather go for a 911SC - maintenance costs on the 928 are appalling! If you want an alternative, go for a BMW 840. The 944S2 is the best ever front Porsche engined ever made. I will never buy a 911 etc they all look the same! Having said that, a Ferrari 246GTS or the classic 512BB will look happy with my 944S2 in the garage!

I own a 87 5 speed s4 and have always wanted one but have been put off in the past by all the scaremongers who talk about electric probs and high parts prices. Its a great car and i wish i had bought one years ago .Just go for it! you wont regret it :D
As long as the car has a good history ,cam belt water pump etc and as Brett says make sure everything works.
On mine there have been a few niggles, but they have all been easy to fix ,dodgy relay bad earths that sort of thing no more than you would expect from any 25 year old car . They did,nt have to be fixed its just i love to have all things working, interior lights, intensive wash system to name a couple.
Parts can be bought cheap on ebay making it as cheap as any modern car.
I think you must be keen to fix it yourself or like me try to :) as looking at the bills from the last owner he spent a fortune on just servicing which is an easy diy job .Its a pleasure to work on as the build quality is so good . Its a real drivers car :D

Wow some great responses to this I must say.
My 944 is only expensive to service as I have had major work done. 48K service and Belts and Chains.
this year she needs a brake overhaul which I will do myself.

I'm reasonably handy with a spanner so no problems doing odd jobs myself but Electrics are my down fall.
I know nothing about electrics at all. And I Mean nothing. AC/DC is a kick ass Rock and Roll band as far as I'm concerned.

I would have to find one with full service history as I am OCD and would have to keep the book stamped but general maintenance I can do my self.

I think I need to seriously start thinking about this and look at a few cars.

Ahh I feel happy already and we are not even in March yet. Splendid.

Glad to hear your enthusiasm!

A 928 with genuine FSH would be a rare thing, but also not that relevant.

For cars of the age 928s are reaching (youngest 16 years old) the concept of an annual service doesn't really apply. You need to keep on top of things with preventative maintenance, many aspects of which are not covered in service schedule.

What is a good sign is very recent spending by the current owner - look for someone as OCD as yourself, not whether a wiper blade was changed in 1994! Best chance of finding a good one is an enthusiast owned one, so check club and specialist mags/websites. However these days values are so low that you just don't see many for sale in these kind of places very often. I notice you hardly ever see a mag like 911 & PW selling any. Another good wheeze is to go to an event with a decent 928 turnout (in 928 circles any more than 6 would be a decent turnout!) and see if any for sale.

Lindsay is right, I'm sure you'll find that the "normal in-line four" was a cobbled together half of the V8. :roll:

The 928 is a great car, and I've owned both at the same time. The 944 is fun, but the 928 is great. Ultimately, the 944 was sold and I still have the 928. Servicing was on a par with the 944 and just as easy to do yourself. Any issues are soon sorted with help from the guys here and on the 928 UK site. I've yet to find a part that is NLA and have found that my local OPC were cheapest for most parts.

Like you, I had a 944 and knew I wanted a 928. I spent a year looking and searching for the right one. I'm sure Stratfordshark remembers my awkward PM's asking "What about this one?". :lol: Keep researching and looking, get a grasp of which are good ones and which model you like best. I originally wanted an S4 and love mine, but my next one will be an early S model with a manual box ( yes, I have thought that far ). :D

I saw that 928 GTS already.
I looks fabulous but I need to save a bit more before I can stretch that far.
There is time and I am in no rush and I love my 944 so am happy to stick with that until the right car comes up and the right time.
I am definitely going to go along to some meetings and look at some members 928's if they don't mind.

It's like a disease and it's set in already. I had it when looking for my 944 and didn't let up until I got the right one. I can feel it happening again.

:idea: Better leave the Buyers guide out some where so the other half sees it well in advance :wink:

I'm sure many of us have these inner feelings on our desired models (cars that is :lol: ) I know I had when hankering for a tweaked Turbo when I already had a superb S2 Cab. These feelings/urges should not be bottled up and need to be played out. Best of luck with the search & good luck with the other half (speaking from experience here 8) )
