Hello All,

I am thinking seriously about purchasing a Cayenne for our family car. I have a few questions and who better to ask than current owners.

1. What are yearly running costs, I ususally do around 6000 to 9000 miles a year.
2. I'm looking at a 3.2, what are fuel costs like and what sort of MPG am i looking to achieve. I know they are heavy on fuel but just how heavy.
3. Overall opinion, comfort, space, quality, power etc.
4. Insurance - I am 42 with full no claims and have been quoted £710 so far.

Anything i should look out for would also be appreciated.

Mine is a 928 so a different V engine to yours, but similar in consumption.....yours will be a V6 (3.2 or 3.6 I think)

I have seen and read a lot of posts about Cayenne consumption and to be honest on small mileages like yours which are presumably not long motorway drives, then I would expect you to get around 20 MAX to the gallon on average...on a long run, you could probably push it up to maybe 25 to 27 ish, but around town and short journeys (school run etc), then you would do well to get 20...on the bigger Cayenne V8 engine....around town is nearer 15....

Having said that , they are a phenomenal vehicle and well worth the cost of fuel...I have driven several.

Hi, a friend of mine has had all 3 models of the old shape Cayenne, he reckoned that the 3.2 was no more economical than the 4.5S but quite a bit slower, it was the Turbo S that gobbled the fuel, IIRC he was in the high teens/low 20s in the 2 n/a, whereas the turbo got about 16 mpg, he's now got a Panamera Turbo, and that goes like stink !! If you can get a warranty as he had quite a few issues

It looks a really good price, low mileage and a 2 year warranty. It is also a manual. I know these aren't popular but i prefer them. Only 2% ever had a manual box apparently.

A lot of car for the money. With winter coming, I would.

I'd personally go for a Turbo

my only criticism of the V6 that i drove was that Iit did spend a lot of time shifting up and down the auto box - obviously the manual will prevent this !

I did over 50K miles in my turbo, ave was 19.8 according to computer (at approx 1.2 per litre you can work out how much the fuel cost was)

advantage of the v6 is that it doesn't suffer from the plastic coolant pipe issue the V8s have

look out for vibration - centre propshaft bearing can be an issue
also coilpacks go (it is a Porsche afterall)

other than that - a great car for the money

Gutted, it turns out the car was put on the Porsche GB website by mistake and wasn't a Porsche approved used car.

Its now going to be put up for £13000 as a Stratstone Dealer car with a 3 months warranty.

Join TIPEC, negotiate a purchase price with the salesman, and then ask for the 10% discount that OPC Wilmslow give to us - at the end of the day Stratstone is the OPC. If you don't ask you don't get and it is a buyers' market.

Alternatively go and buy the much better VW Touareg diesel. Same basic car, much better looking, rarer than a Cayenne, cheaper to run, more street presence, no stigma.

Only my opinion, but it's each to his own..... and it's your money / image.

I looked at one a while ago. I formed these conclusions. Reliable, a few known issues.
Cooling mainfold under intake manifold, made of plastic & leaks, around £700 or so all in. If left destroys the starter by filling it full of coolant. Replacement is cast aluminium. This is age not mileage so aroun 6-9 years old.
Drive or prop shaft fails at high mileage typically £800 or so fitted.
Coils fail eventually, not difficult to do & source.
The V6 is no more economical than a V8 & is underpowered for the 2 1/4 tons or so.
Turbos are outrageously thirsty, guys at work get low teens unless on a run where they get 16-17MPG!

Does this one fit your bill? You've got me looking at these now! Forecast is for a harsh winter up here.

I'm following this post as I'm in exactly the same state of mind as cpu was last year. Thinking of swapping my old, but very reliable Colorado (2nd real owner -ex demo- 2000 on an X, 205k miles and still so reliable) for something with a bit of excitment. Used to own a 79 911SC before the kids came along and always wanted back into Porsche ownership. Saw a very nice looking 2003 4.5 S with alleged 55k miles for around £10k and am sorely tempted. BUT, what are the real costs of ownership like? I currently get 26 - 27mpg on diesel and could live with 21 - 23 mpg on petrol on my now limited 6k to 7k a year. I live near Colchester, so is there a good Specialist nearby as dont think I could afford OPC rates on maintenance. I've noted the manifold issue on Cayennes of this vintage, but anything else to worry about. And finally, did cpu eventually buy?
