Sorry to rant but this makes my blood boil :angryfire:

This news story sums up the state of the nation http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=541068&in_page_id=1770&ct=5

Everyone at the Home Office (and the government) should hang their heads in shame today

Rant over

Yeah, the way the government treat the Gurkhas is just awful. If someone is prepared to risk their life for our country, they have every right to live here and have the same benefits of a British national for as long as they please in my view.

Calm down Daily Mail readers! This is exactly what they want you to think!
I have strong feelings about both of these stories but they're not related. Yes former Gurkha soldiers deserve better and I believe they should be treated more favourably when it comes to immigration. As it is they live in Nepal with a generous pension (if they retired before 1997) and are treated the same as any other immigrant (regardless of nationality) - they have to prove a right of entry. No other foreign nationals employed by a British organisation are entitled to free passage so the same applies to these guys. It's the fact that some aspects of their treatment is arbitary and discriminatory and that's the story.
The sicko kiddy fiddler is a British national, so has been deported here from Australia in the same way as we deport criminals (....well, we try to). There was uproar from Daily Mail readers when foreign criminals weren't deported - how do you think the Aussies would react if the guy wasn't deported from there?

I will not mention the paedophile

However, the Gurkha's are based about 2 miles from my home and I also have a friend from Nepal.

My youngest son plays cricket for a local team and one of their team is an ex Gurkha, sound guy.

They are fine people in my experience and where else do we get a nation of people willing to fight and die for us and not be able to take automatic residency here.

When a local Gurka soldier retired from the Army he had one hellova job to get a residency permit here to open up a Gurkha restaurant. Eventuall he did. Nice place and nice food if you like spicey food.

Like others, if they wish to reside here and have a specialist skill(s) and are willing to contribute to the extent the Gurhkas do and have done, then why the problem.
