I didn't think it was legal to forward date a car registration like this one http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2862600.htm, its a 1970 car with a 1973 registration

It is more tightly controlled these days but then a lot of cars would have been plated for date of import not date of manufacture.
I had an Alfa Guilia at one point that was on an old N plate (76) abc123N when in fact it was about 70/71 as it had been imported from Jersey.

R was 1973, it's on the right plate. It's fitted with a '73 2.7 lump.

R is '76, L is '73, but its a '70 shell, so should it be H plate

I stand corrected, my first car a Pug 504 was a '76 (NET 253R)

Like Jim says, they changed the rules.

I brought my first ever car back with me from Germany after a three year tour there, and it's still registered in my name. It's a 1979 Triumph Spitfire that was first registered as a BFG (British Forces Germany) car - RD 819 B was the number. It was December 1981 when I returned to the UK and I was given the Reg No SPC 104X.

I understand that they now give you the year of manufacture, not the year of import.
