You can get a tidy 968 with full and up to date history these day for £6,000 in this sad climate.
A certain 968 Sport up for £6,000 was snapped up quickly by a dealer recently before I could get up to view it ( and I would have bought straight away if happy with it). That car was put up for 8,000 within less than a week , is it a better can now it is 8,000 ?

A very special 968 up for 19,995 ( sold for less I'm told) immediately went up for sale for £29,995 did it become a better car ? not wishing to be bulshy just genuine food for thought/discussion. And Rav you 'know' why i wouldnt sell that car if I were you

Regards Mas

I'm with Mike C here. I think you should take the time to thoroughly check the car for leaks yourself rather than listen to some mechanic who probably knows what it is but like somebody says... wants a nice holiday out of it.

When we had this problem with my brother's Land Rover Freelander we started off thinking head gasket because of the symptoms, but thorough checking (by us, not a mechanic) eventually found that the header tank was cracked, only it wouldn't leak until the system was heated up and pressurised. A second hand header tank was purchased and it's been right as rain.

Worth a look for a leak somewhere..... remember to make sure the engine's up to temperature.

Ok, just received a call from the specialist.

The discs and pads which i bought from Alasdair are not needed as it was a broken sensor wire (Argghhhh).
The bottom hose on the radiator is leaking coolant out and the radiator has a hole in it.

They wanted to know if they could order these parts and then continue the investigation.

I will keep you up to date.

Ah! Classic hole in the rad. Had that on my S2. Shop around for a replacement rad - they're not cheap.

Side issue: Someone told me a while ago that if the oil cooler gasket goes, it can cause similar symptoms of head gasket failure. Apparently, some earlier 944's had this problem when under warranty with Porsche back in the day. It was alledgedly traced to the oil cooler gasket/seal. Can anyone verify this??? Or is someone having me on???

Thats great news. Rad's aren't bad compared to some modern cars. You may well find that fixes it. Probably time you changed the coolant anyway! :)

Ben the oil cooler on N/A '44s is an oil water heat exchanger which is problematic. Though the turbo has an external cooler I believe. So yes when the gasket fails it looks like the head gaskets gone. Been there done that.

Wow! So I am starting to get a little bit knowledgeable about the '44 even though I no longer own one!

If it's £300 on Porsche shop. Opc will be 250. JMG will be £200 which is what mine cost! :blackeye:

Have you tried the breakers like Porsche-apart etc.

Definitely worth a call.

Yep, those prices are about right JJ. Don't bother getting it from Porsche Shop. See various threads previously as to why.

I got mine from OPC but sounds like JMC can do it cheaper still. I wouldn't bother getting a second hand one. You won't be able to guarantee the quality - you might end up in the same boat, erm I mean car, a few years down the line.

Just out of interest, is there any else worth doing WYIT doing this type of job?

I would ask them to get it re-cored (subject to seeing how it looks when it comes out) should be able to get a recore that will do the job nicely and last long term.

If this is the same garage that quoted you £1500 for a head gasket I'd be off to find another garage before getting anything done (and I doubt it will need anything else done from the sound of i that will cure it was only a small amount of water being used).

New radiator is in and the car is ready to be collected.

I have spoken with the garage regarding keeping it for a few more weeks and adding my box of go faster parts back onto the car.
I will start a new thread about this. :blackeye:
