The dot matrix display is backlit, the fact that the dimness has moved to the other side suggests that the lighting unit has been replaced the other way round or the bulbs have been put back in a different order! Don't go buying a new matrix without investigating as I think the lighting unit is separate.
I have a similar problem in that the normal display is fine, but whenever I get a warning which should be red instead of the normal orange colour the display goes blank which can be quite alarming if you suddenly notice it happening but have no idea what the car is trying to warn you about

(although if you get a bright torch and shine it at the correct angle you can just about make out the diagram). I assume in my case the white backlight works but the red one doesn't, however I haven't got around to getting it seen-to as I fear it may need more than just a simple bulb replacement.
