You need a few grand to do a 928 justice surely  . Being top of the range its worth top of the range car audio gear for a 928.

A Scottish wallets tightness to open makes a Yorkshire man seem like a London Stock Broker on bonus day, :P .

A bit of Genesis amplification with some Buwalda Hybrids speakers and something tasty upfront to twiddle with.

I think the Porsche amplifier had multiple outputs.
In the end I took a chance on it and the stereo did survive, the rear shelf speakers do improve the sound if they are working properly.

Hi Lightning
I just removed the Porsche amplifier and made up a loom for my 1988 S4 as you mentioned above. All mine work OK but I have noticed that if I have the volume up too loud the Head Unit switches off and back on again. Works OK if I turn the volume down! So maybe i'm suffering the same thing - too high load. I have a fairly good Kenwood Head Unit BT8041U, which has a seperate amp out which I couold make use of but was going to look into the Head Units wiring details much closer before I did that.

I don't want to hijack this thread so may do my homework and come back on a seperate thread for help with you guys who seem to know more about auto HIFI set up & electronics than I.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated though.

Thanks
Steve

I've already sold half your car on ebay, the buyers are getting annoyed about the delays :P .

The cd player in my car wont play cd's apparently just abit of radio. I wonder if it needs the earth renewing. Just listen to the rumble. A bit more rumble would be nice when funds allow though.

If your earth is not good then only so much power can be earthed through the ariel and case.

My MK2 MR2 had the same problem, the cheap cd player it came with had problems cutting out. So i purchased a nice top of the range Alpine unit instead. I put it in, wired it up and it was fine on the radio but every time it went to cd you could here it spin up and then reset the unit.

I rested the cage in the dash and the cd player worked at low volume. It was managing to earth through the cage. So i took it back out and someone had made a right hash of the wiring, so i re-did all the wiring in the power loom then put a big thick earth straight to a bit of metal inside the dashboard to get a good earth and it was fine after that no problem. The Alpine unit was taken out and sold when i wasn't using the car much and i fitted a low spec kenwood for the new owner and that's been running fine for a year or so now.

If the unit resets itself i would say its struggling to get enough power eg when a deep note or a symbol crash etc or just turning on if its a really bad earth.

If the amp cuts out i would expect the rest of the unit to keep working as standard and just the noise to cut out.

The unit is probably shutting down in self-protection as it is seeing an excessive load on the output. Continuous operation would cause the output I.C to overheat and fail.
You could try operating it with front bias as a temporary solution (set the front/rear fader at say +2 front)

It may be necessary to rewire the rear speakers in series or insert a resistor in the rear circuit.

If the amp was overloaded i would expect it to cut out the amp but there is no need for the whole unit to shut off.

That smacks of lack of power to me.

You mean voltage drop in the feed to the stereo/amplifier? Could be.

You need to check the resistance of the speaker outputs, anything less than 4 Ohms and you're overloading the amp.

Where are you based John?

If you are not too far from Leicester I'll help you install it.

I did the whole lot on my old GT which was a mission but well worth it... As mentioned on the first page the best thing to do with the rears is to make brackets out of the old speakers - Sounds weird but it is straight-forward when you look at them!

If you need any advice on how to remove bits of trim/doorcards etc, let me know.

Hi John,

Any chance of an update on how you got on with Uplands?

I've previously tried both Uplands and Sextons in Bristol. Due to the depths of the front speakers I always get plenty of head scratching but not a great deal else.

Currently have a set of 2-way Pioneers fitted as a stop gap but the grills aren't exactly in keeping with the rest of the interior and the sound's not great.

hello there,
yes got some good results, ok original tweeters were kept in the front doors, pioneer front speakers, and rear 6"speakers and parcel shelf speakers fitted, also an active small 150 sub inthe boot section, did not have an amp fitted and is running off the stereo, they cut the old porsche speakers out and fitted the pioneers to the brackets hence they fit, above the 6" in the rear the smaller speaker were disconected too, i went for the kevlar speakers.

Because of the seprate active sub 150watts it sounds brilliant, it takes the load off the stereo,

im really pleased with the results.

hope that helps

john
