You will struggle.
I looked at this on mine, and there are a few issues. The front speakers are an odd size and there's a crossover inside the door so you can't just fit replacements.
The rubber surround on the larger speaker tends to come away, these are now obsolete but you can get the earlier type larger front speaker new and second hand.
The rears are also a problem as you say, and it's those that contribute most to the poor bass from the original system. They are quite a shallow fit as well. I never found a suitable replacement that looked "original".
The mounting is not perfectly flat and it's hard to get replacements to look right.

Someone done this recently on the 928 UK site, I've tried searching but can't find it. One of the other guys might remember who it was and send out an email for you.

MBQuarts fit at front - you want to replace the crossover anyway.

They fit in rear too, but you have to cut the mounting ring off the original speaker and bolt screw new speakers onto that. I used DSD216s in the rear and they sound good! Just enough room for clearance but you won't get decent bass as not enough empty space around the rears.

Forget ones in hatch - they are in silly place and do nothing for the sound.

There are Sony 4 inch which fit doors too.

Are you using the original Porsche supplied amplifier (fitted under a cover to the side of the passenger seat) or have you rewired it for a stereo with amplifier built in?

Consider making some pods at the bottom of the door where the carpet is with fibre glass and aiming them up slightly, sort out the aim before you finish so the baffle is at the right angle before you set it in place though.

Then mount the tweeters at the bottom of the A-pillars.

You could get some old door panels if you want some original material to cover your additions so they look even more oem.

A small enclosure in the wheel well in the boot will allow more bass as shown recently by someone on the 928 mail list.

Then mount some amps of your choice in the boot, you could even alter the rear trim panel and extend it to hide the amps underneath.

With a Head Unit of your choice of course.

Consider running active with a set of wires from the boot to each speaker, even if you run with a passive crossover for now its much less hassle to run both sets of wire at the same time, then if you run a channel per speaker in the future you don't have to take the interior to bits again to do it. Just make sure you make the wires long enough to reach the amp terminals if you use crossovers first.

I sense a proper car audio expert in our midst!

Nope, I'm afraid I get a whooosh! Right over my head. I can see me having a job in Leeds one Friday and getting Mark to help me on the Saturday when I want to do this.

Are you still using the original Porsche amplifier or have you replaced it?

That's what I did as some previous owner had removed the original amplifier.
I made up a loom and reconnected all the speakers but came up against problems getting all six rear speakers to work as connecting them resulted in an excessive load on the stereo (3 ohms)
I think the Porsche amplifier had multiple outputs.
In the end I took a chance on it and the stereo did survive, the rear shelf speakers do improve the sound if they are working properly.
