Hi Guys,

firstly I'd like to say thanks for the central group for making me welcome on my first meeting.

Unfortunately my journey home didn't go too well..... when i came to start the car it took at least 5 attempts to start but it eventually fired. This is rare because it usually starts first time every time, cold warm it just starts... that was the first problem.

Then whilst changing gear it started to feel really lumpy and not smooth..........then about a mile from my house i couldn't select any gear other than 5th. I pulled over and tried to find 1st or 2nd for a while & eventually managed to get 1st so i could limp home. My house is at the bottom of a hill so at this point i knew i could roll home so tried to get it into 2nd gear. It did go into 2nd but with some effort... i then pressed the clutch to roll again and the car started to slow down and sounded though it was the gearbox slowing me down.

Once on my drive i really struggled to find gears again but eventually forced it in to reverse so i could park it.

I'm no mechanic but I'm guessing it could be the clutch....... does this sound like the clutch has gone or does it just need adjusting? Or is it something more serious like the gearbox? Also if anyone has any suggestions on the first problem I'd be grateful...

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.......

It's typical that at the meet i was saying how good it was etc etc....

Cheers

Spencer

Sorry to hear you've got gremlins.

Does the clutch pedal feel any different?

They can sometimes be a pig to start mine does it occassionaly. The first time it did it was after she had been filmed for The Used Car Roadshow, which was at the BMW show at Gaydon.

Lot's of chav's all smiling with glee as I kept turning the key.

The clutch doesn't feel any different.... it's just a pig to get in gear. It started on they way home and steadily got worse. I live about 8 mile from the meet so it seemed to happen very quickly.

i've posted this thread in the 911 section by mistake......911 she's not.

So i just thought I'd try it again now it's been left to cool down for a while with a little trip round the block

Good news

It started first time.....

Bad news

I got it into gear on the drive no problem i.e car not moving. Started to drive and got it in to 2nd without too much trouble other than it was a bit lumpy. I then tried to get it in to 3rd and crunch.... that nasty gearbox noise. So i pulled over to a complete stand still and it went in to 1st no problem but could no longer change to 2nd when moving....... it also seemed to judder a bit on pull off which would suggest clutch. When i got out of the car i think i could smell that nasty burning clutch smell.

Can the clutch on the 944 S2 be adjusted or am i just being hopeful and about to have to fork out on a new clutch? Any idea how much a new clutch is fitted? I read the thread that Andy G wrote about his clutch change and I'm just not sure i know enough or am man enough to attempt a DIY job.

Not so happy

Spencer :(

Phone round the local specialsts for some quotes, I don't think you'll get much change out of £1k.

It's about the same price if it's the gearbox or the clutch that needs fixing.

Ummm, strange symptoms. If it goes into first then it doesn't sound like clutch, but some of the other areas do. The difficulty getting into gear could be linkage rather than clutch. Difficult t know without seeing & having it on a ramp.
Doing a clutch on one of these is major work, especially without a ramp. I wouldn't even go their unless you're 110% on what you are doing.

Sounds like you may have inadvertently lifed the clutch as a result of another problem e.g. sticking slave cylinder.

Have you check to see there is actually fluid in the master cylinder reservoir?

One thing is for sure don't drive it any further. You will need a tow to a specialist as Sean says.

If you let us know where you are then someone on here can chime in with your nearest indie/OPC.

Hope it is not too expensive!

Regards,
Adam

I live just outside of Birmingham ( Solihull ) & the closest garages to me are

Solihull OPC
Shirleys @ Meriden
Porscheshop

Not sure which would be the best place to take it.

The guy who spanners at Shirley's has a good reputation.

Porscheshop I haven't heard anything negative or positive about the quality of their service side. Kevin's just had his allignment done there and is happy. We get 10% discount from them as well.

OPC probably not an option the labour rate for doing a clutch will be scary.

Porsche shop have quoted £575 plus vat for new clutch and Shirley's are getting back to me. That doesn't sound to bad to me though.

That sounds like a good price, make sure that is all in regardless. You don't want a few difficult bolts adding a few extra hours of labour to the bill.

May I just note that we only get the 10% discount on parts and not on labour.

Sorry I should have said off of the price of the clutch.

Hi Spencer,

this is my third or fourth attempt to respond. gremlins are about today.

Good to see you last night but sorry to hear about the car

I and others swear by Martin Brown at Shirley's, see Praise or Grumble on the forum

The business side of service and maintenance is his own called Porsche Tech

He can be contacted on 07831489654 but I think he is in Barcelona until mid / late week this week

better still go see him, (not in the 944 though) he is not far from you

mention you are in TIPEC and have been recommended to him by the guy with the dark blue 993 Targa who still has to pay for the MOT done last wednesday

I called Martin this morning and he's going to get back with a quote for a new clutch but said around £600 - £700. I'm going to get it towed over to him on Saturday....... might have to push car up the street and call the RAC for a free lift!!!

Hopefully it's not the clutch and maybe something less pocket damaging.....
