The car is an import, I'm glad the guy who sold it was honest enough to tell you. Parts should be ok, Sulzer is close enough to you. You might meet him at the meeting @ Bo'Ness. You should get the summer out it before stripping it. They're fun to drive. There is actually a meeting in Peebles tomorrow, but it is a bit short notice for that. You'll be amazed how cheap parts are from OPC in Ebinburgh.

Might do, nothing set in stone yet, but would like to use the seats out of it in the Ghia and stick a pair of buckets in the 944.

Working tomorrow so no chance of making that :(

Hi,thats not a 944S engine, probably 2.7 or maybe 2.5(I dont know of any visual difference between those two).Good to hear the sills have been replaced but why didnt they paint them body colour? There is something wrong at the front and Im wondering if the offside front wing has had a bit of a bump as it seems a bit out of line and the front valence doesnt seem to fit right either. If you got it cheap then thats great but as mentioned above DO get the belts changed as a snapped belt is a ruined engine.Good luck! :)

Cans of black paint are sold in poundland, colour matched ones are £14 each posting.php?mode=quote&f=25&p=62169#

Hi Stu

1. Steering wheel off. Pull off horn (watch nose!) then 24mm socket will release the wheel.
2. Clock/heater vent cowling off. 3 screws up into dash above clocks then 4 I think round about the heater vents. Carefully prise out.
3. Remove cowling on steering column, 3 screws, makes it easier to get clocks out.
4. Remove 4 brass coloured screws in each corner of clock pod.
5. Ease clocks out then you will see 3 multiplugs with lugs on each end. Push in the lugs and they come off.
6. Remove clocks from car and lie flat and you will see the 4 black triangular things I talk off!

Refitting is a reversal of removing but don't overtighten any of the little black screws or the ones holding the clocks in or you'll break the fasteners or the trim pieces! Make sure the steering wheel is ultra tight though!!

If you want me to do it give me a shout!

Stuart

Thanks mate, will give it a shot, will get myself some tasteful blue LED's to put in there at the same time :D

I think all your questions have been answered by now! Enjoy your car and have fun :)

If the car is solid and just had replacement sills, if done well, it would be a real shame to break the car, so many 944s are now rotten. :(

Yeah your right, it's great fun to drive, so unlikely to get broken, my point was if it had been bad i could have, not i was going to, sorry if it sounded that way.

I used to work in Bilston Glen, the road from Lanark was the only thing that kept me going there every day. You've got a great part of the country for the car.

2.7 engine could have been fitted due to either cam belt or chain failure, 944S's did hang around into '89 due to the introduction of the S2, could the rich running be due to it still having the 944S ECU or AFM ? or would the 2.7 not run with these

This the 16V lumps run a very different management set to the 8Vs only one flywheel sensor for a start. And because of this the engine loom is quite different.

I'm not 'having a go', but this thread has become interesting.

It's each to his own, but this car is an example of why I personally would never buy a car from Ireland........ or Liverpool for that fact. I wonder if it may be a front end shunt that's had to have the engine replaced, hence the wrong engine and the poor fit of all the panels and lights.

Did you see the receipts for the new sills? You can take the vents out of the door shuts and see inside with a torch. You should just see new metal and no rust if they have just been replaced.

I used to have a 2.7 Lux. The wheels are right, but the tyres don't look right. What make / style / size are they? They look like transit van tyres - I have actually seen where they have been fitted because they were cheaper, and even though the sizing is right they do not look right on normal road rims. Strange but true - something to do with the width.

The V5 says it is a 944S, but what does the V5 say about engine size? And also when you came to insure it and gave them the registration number what did they tell you it was?

You've got a lot of work to do there, good luck with it, but there have been much better cars broken for parts on this forum.

Hi Stu , just bought a 944 as well before christmas . I bought a multi car check from Autocheck (Experian) and had some checks left over . I'd seen this car advertised on e bay last year and thought it looked a bit suspicious as others have . Just run a history check on it and its bad news I'm afraid .The car was declared a write off by the insurers on 10/1/1996 . Previously it was on the plate F572HMR which was changed to the current one on 26/08/1996 after it was written off .

That could explain the new back end/rear hatch. Mine would have been written off if I'd claimed on the insurance.

Car was dry stored for eight years, fully stamped to 108K.
Full leather interior, electric sunroof, seats windows and mirrors. CD player.
Immobiliser. Good oil pressure, starts and drives great.
One new sill, sunroof bag.
Bad points to the car are it needs the driver side wing replaced due to surface rust (this would only cost £75 ebay to replace).
Handbrake cable needs adjusted/tightened
Bottom of driver side rear arch there is a small dent which can be easily repaired."

The front wing needs replaced, so it might look ill fitting due to this.
I'm sure it needs the belts done and the MAF calibrated first.

There's a discrepancy in the history of the car as well . Previous owner had said the car was originally imported from Ireland (I think) but according to autocheck report car was registered in Great Britain first and is now registered by DVL NI . From what I remember of the photos of the interior that too was a miss match (including the dash ) which may have been the result of poor repair work after the accident . Bearing in mind the car would still have been worth a fair bit back in '96 it would have required a fairly hefty shunt in order to write it off . Not wanting to rain on your parade Stu , but if i were driving it I'd be wanting to get the car thoroughly checked to make sure its not a cut n shut . Have you checked the serial number of the V5 against those that were stolen from the DVLA ? If the serial number of the registration document falls within the following ranges then its dodgy- BG8229501 to BG9999030 or BI2305501 to BI2800000

I would echo what Stevie d has said about getting the car properly inspected before using the car in anger. Get a qualified engineer to look at it.

It is quite likely that the car has been properly repaired and is roadworthy, but for peace of mind, a few quid getting an engineers report on it would be wise IMO.

The car was repaired 14 years ago and presumably, has been used without problem since then, so I would actually be quite positive about that!!

Good luck with it. I certainly would not write it off at this stage until there had been a bit more investigation into it.

Thanks to you guys who have done all the research I don't feel so bad now about my harsh comments - they have all been justified. Sorry but you have been stitched-up.

I would take the car back and get the money back - that's the easiest thing to do. No matter how much you spend on it it will always be worthless... and possibly dangerous too. If it does have a stolen V5 then it's straight to the police, which won't get you your money back, so I would first go straight back to the seller and tell him what you have discovered and tell him that all you want is your money back..... then when your money is in your bank go to the police so that he can get what he deserves.

Good luck finding another - but don't part with your cash until you've asked on here what the opinion is on the car.

Please make sure you keep us updated on what happens.

By the way, how much did you pay for it?

Welcome scotlandstu. I also spotted this car advertised before Xmas - £900 if I remember correctly.

Good luck with it. Looks like you have a fair bit of info in this thread to digest.

I'm fairly close to you (Rosewell) so it's good to have another 944 owner near by.
Cheers.

You're head will be spinning after reading that lot, mine was!!

Just take a step back, check everything thats been mentioned and take it from there.

Have the car checked for your own peace of mind and if all is not well, break it for parts and move one.

As for taking the car back, if it was a dealer yes, with a private seller seriously anyone should know the chances of getting your money back on a no warrenty private sale is futile.

Personally I'd just have it checked for safety and tidy it up,a s its been said it been OK for 14 years and so long as it won't fall apart in shunt it'll be fine.
I'd be extremely surprised if its on a stolen V5, its had a checkered past granted but thats probably all it is.

Tyres do look wide though, but you could generate some money by selling that S2 hatch and replacing it with a £20 standard one

And whatever people say, if you have done a cambelt before and are a fairly confident home mechanic you can replace all rollers/pulleys and both belts for £145 and have the job done in 4 hours (I know I last did it yesterday)

Thanks for the replies and all your investigative work. However I'm perfectly happy with it and will be keeping it. I have been under it on the ramp and had a good check round and everything looks fine, front wings may not be perfectly straight but to me it's hardly the end of the world. I have also done a fair few miles and the way it has been driven combined with the weather if it wasn't solid it would be in a hedge by now

As I said before if the worst comes to the worst I can break it. I paid £800 for it, from pricing the brake parts i need from my KG came to ~£300, and the engine, gearbox, torque tube, suspension, bodywork, electrical bits etc etc would all still be there to break and sell, so it's unlikely I'm going to loose much if anything on it. I always had this in the back of my mind when i bought it.
