Hey everyone.

Been lurking the forums for a while (very quiet here). Hoping very soon to be a lucky 928 owner also.

I wanna spend between 5-6k but could stretch slightly more if needed.

Just wondering what you guys think about this one?

Never trusted dealers unless they're Porsche marque specialists, which this one ain't and he wants top money for an S4. If you know what you're looking for then check it out or visit your local club meet and see if someone can come with you otherwise 928.org would be a much better source of a cherished vehicle. There's an S4 on there for similar money at moment, also a rarer GT manual one.

I saw the 2 S4's on 928.org and both look very nice. Just wasn't sure if adverts were recent or expired. The GT is nice also but can't own a Red car (long story).

My problem is, I live in Northern Ireland so unable to go look at lots of cars. Would need to do deal over the phone and fly over to collect it. Not ideal I know but virtually no 928's for sale here

Regarding the two cars on the 928uk site (not counting the red GT, of course), the black one seems to be the better bet; although it's slightly more than your budget, the maintenance record seems up to date and the fact that the motor mounts have been done suggest that the current owner is prepared to spend on non-essential jobs to keep the car in top condition (the other, grey, one is by my reckoning way overdue for a cambelt change). It doesn't cost anything to send an e-mail to see if it's still for sale.

I think buying a 928 over the phone is a fairly risky strategy, any saving you make by not viewing the car before purchase could easily be spent rectifying faults that you would have spotted if you'd inspected it yourself - you would be much better off coming over to the mainland for a long weekend and target an area like Greater London or Manchester/Leeds etc. where you should be able to try out three or four cars per day. Alternatively it might be worth paying to have any potential purchases inspected by a specialist.

If you posted on the 928uk mailing list or here in advance you might even find someone local to do a pre-inspection and help you weed out the total dogs beforehand.

I noticed last night the Black one is now the top advert in carandclassic.co.uk for 928's. So guessing is still for sale. This would have been my preference of the two and my budget could move to the extra for the right car. As I have read it's better to pay more for a good one.

A long weekend on the mainland checking out a few sounds like a good idea though to be honest I wouldn't really know what to look out for. I would prefer to pay a specialist to check one out for me. I think that would be money better spent.

Have also seen this one, anyone any thoughts on this?

Classic line " this car does not get used". No mention of when the last service/cam belt change, 4 years maximum. Maybe worth a visit, but I wouldn't buy that one over the phone without someone looking at it for independant advice. The 928 uk site offers the best from true 928 enthusiasts. If I were buying another, that's where I would go. You should really drive a few to be sure you get one you like.

Would be nice to have the option of driving a few but only one for sale in Northern Ireland and that isn't a good one.

But you only really want the independent inspection done on one car, the one that you think is the one.

I don't know what the current cost of such an inspection is, but you need to compare that with the cost of coming and doing some of the research in person, rather than over the phone.

Also, it's an oft-stated recommendation that the cars are so individual that one really needs to see and preferably drive several 928s "back-to-back" to get a feel for what is a good one.

I don't know if TIPEC is very active in N. Ireland but there may be some 928-owning club members who would be happy to show you their pride and joy. Alternatively, depending on how long you can wait, there are usually two or three 928 gatherings per year, normally in the south of England, which would give you the opportunity to see lots of them in one place, sometimes there are even one or two for sale.

Car not too far from me. I would have enjoyed checking it over for you, but combo of weather and working away most of week makes that tricky right now. If you need an opinion on other cars which come up around west midlands in future do give me a shout.

I doubt if the usual (otherwise excellent) Porsche inspection specialists see many 928s relative to usual 911/boxster fare so they may not be as helpful as normal in this case. You need someone who knows these cars very well.

Do join the free 928uk list via the same website you've seen cars for sale. Hundreds of owners on there, so more chance of finding local one who is happy to check out likely car for you.

Good luck. 928s are wonderful machines, so worth taking time to find the right one. They are out there if you're patient, and ridiculously cheap even if they need work to bring them up to snuff.

The advice to buy from enthusiast is wise. The key thing to check is evidence of recent work/expenditure to show conscientious and knowledgeable owner.

Waiting for a 928 meet might be a good idea. Get to see a good variety there and decide which model I like the best.

Hardly be test driving too many 928's in this weather anyway let alone drive one back from the UK.

I saw the list on 928org website, only one guy on it from N.Ireland. Plus only one 928 for sale over here at the minute and it's a not very clean red one.

Seems an enthusiasts car is the way to go. Probably a premium to pay for one but that's worth it in the long run it seems.

Have just seen this one. Was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it?

I like the colour and interior and the recent cam belt work seems a good plus point.

Have to admit, I am very tempted.

Does look ok, nothing obvious about it. It would need looked at and test driven before you bought it.

As already said it "looks" ok but as usual at a dealer it has been valeted which is why it looks so clean inside particularly...

I would email them and ask what works and what does not.... and the Aircon NEVER just needs regassing by the way lol

As long as ALL the electrics work its a very good sign...if they dont..avoid it...
