Hi all,

Does anyone know if an s2 box is a straight swap for an oval dash lux?

No, don't think so. Different ratios I think.

The gearboxes can be swapped certainly 85 1/2 on 944s anyway there may be an issue with some drive shafts on some cars.
JJ seemns to have found an issue with speedo drives which I wasn't aware of. I think that early cars which use two gearbox mounts can be converted to a single mount. But the tank shape and size is different in early cars.

You can & it will fit but it will make the car feel lazy. Too tall a diff. Plenty of Audi 016 boxes about at the moment so why? Just make sure it has a speedo drive! ABS cars didn't have one!!

All the cars with ABS that I have broken have had a speedo drive in the gearbox.

Thanks for those replies, I've gone and taken the plunge and managed to pick up a box for 50quid off ebay. Only 3 bids, so hopefully a bit of bargain, if its good of course! But at this price theres not much to lose, except a shed load of work for nothing, only time will tell :? But I'll probably leave fitting it 'til the spring, so I can stew until then.

Not so. The diff carrier on mine has no provision for a speedo drive. I spoke to Jon Mitchel about this & I've been really unlucky as most had. But they deleted it later models to save money. On ABS cars the speedo was run from the ABS Sensor. It's possible they used up there stock of diff's with the drive & then started using diff carriers without. I have one if you don't believe me. The casting is different.

Alisdair. Have you got a diff or a tired gearbox with speedo drive? I only need the carrier as I already have a good new box. I could use the carrier in my existing gearbox but if anything goes wrong then I have no speedo drive!

JJ, I have a noisy S2 complete box if interested. I am heading down to Hull and then Rugby so may be able to drop off if you are on that route. Will be doing journey when roads are not so bad.

Thats interesting. But will the S2 box have the same speedo drive gear or will it have a different number of teeth. Also will the diff' carrier be the same as the Audi 016 box??? Might be safer to get the same gearbox.
Thanks for the thought whatever.
