Good evening,

The Red Shed (1989 944 S2) went to have some rust bubbles touched in at my usual bodyshop (Premier Coachworks in Daventry) and it was discovered the sills were on the way out and full of filler - time to have them replaced. Any suggestions where the best place is to buy the parts? Having checked online, they seem to be between £150-£160 a side at a couple of places, but there were some available on ebay for £65 a side. Bought these and on arrival they were pronounced as "utter crap" by my friend at the bodyshop and so sent back.

Is it feasible to get decent sills from anywhere that aren't Original Porsche items, or am I best off paying for the £150 a side ones?

Given that The Red Shed has swallowed more of my cash in the last year or so than a premier league footballer normally spends on charlie and whores in a decade, I would prefer to do it for as little expenditure as possible, but not if that means putting in crap parts.

Resprayed and filled for the time being so not hugely urgent, but does need to be done at some stage in the next 6 months or so.

Any input much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

Best price I've seen quoted for original sills is around £130 a side inc VAT and delivery from Porsche Exeter 01392 822800

Do you have a link to the crap ones off eBay? Did they come from Scotland? Some of our guys up here have fitted ones made by our RO and said that they have been good, just want to see if they are his.

The ebay ones were bought by Premier, rather than by me, so sorry no link and I wouldn't want to risk libel action by identifying the wrong ones!

Don't think it is wrong to give your opinion of a product. I don't like Nissan Micras, they're crap! What's the big deal? One of our guys said the sills were crap, but once he was shown how to fit them, he's never looked back and his 944 is still on the road. I'm sure our RO uses the original grade of metal, someone was selling them made from tin foil. I hope you get a good set and the car stays on the road. You can't go wrong with OPC, might be a couple of quid more, but you get a warranty. :thumbright:

I have some minor bubbling on my sills and thought that as this becomes a more signficant issue (it's unlikely to get any better!) I could possibly repair with these panels:

http://212.67.202.62/~clubauto/porsche_ ... nd_low.htm

... and then install some fibre glass sill extensions (at £150 per pair) to go over the repair work. Ultimately, it's still likely to cost me in the order of £1,000 to get the repair work done, buy the sills and have the work repainted to a reasonable standard, but, may be a cheaper alternative to full sill replacement and at least I'll have got some sill extensions into the bargain... which from some of the photos I've seen can look pretty good with the PORSCHE logo down the side.

Any thoughts?

I think if ur going 2 replace it MIT aswell replace it with opc. There not much more, there's a lot more desgin work in them, they go right up under the door trim, should be easyer 2 fit and a good chance 2 get the inside checked and fixed or at least rush protected. Iv got some bubbling on mine and I'm taking it back 2 the spary shop as iv not long had it resparyed, seem the sills were ok when they went in and weren't taken back 2 bear metal. If new sills are need opc will be the way follwards 4 me'.

Don't like the box sills but I am a fan off the sterotek style. But only when fitted flush.

Have OPC got them available? When I needed them in the summer, they were on back order from Stuggart with no ETA. :(

Hi there, we have a monthly meeting this Wednesday in Bo'Ness, you can ask him there if you want. Feel free to come along and ask. Might not be busy so there will be plenty of time to chat. I hope to see you there!
