I found a cheap way to fix my sunroof which leaks in heavy rain like we've had this week.

The gist of it is that I bought a 10mm wide by 3mm thick adhesive rubber seal off eBay and inserted it into the gutters on each side and at the back - with the sunroof still in.



It worked a treat and fixed the leak for £2.34

Good idea. Just ordered some. Will give it a go. I've already replaced both inner & outer seal but the drains arn't big enough & when it really rains it still leaks a little. Though not like it used to. Wouldn't be a problem if it was garaged.

Good idea with your leak solution - I hope it continues to work for you over the winter.

I took my my 944 to our local specialist here in Norwich and had the outer sunroof seal replaced - parts and labour £160 plus VAT.... and the sunroof leaked just as much as before I had the work done.

I've ended up resorting to using red insulating tape around the outide of my sunroof everytime a heavy shower looks iminent - your solution is a lot more elegant.

Were there any particular areas your sunroof was leaking from?

I checked my sunroof drains when I was getting the leaks and all four were clear, nevertheless getting in the car during some really heavy showers over the summer to check things out showed the water to be leaking in from the corners of the sunroof and down the insides of either the A or C pillars ending up in the footwells.

If you left the sunroof in place, presumably you only managed to apply the tape to 3 sides?

Shock! The seal is around £60 & takes all of 10 minutes to change! I hope you had other work done in that price...

If the drains are completely clear then they shouldn't leak. The seals are only a secondary line of defence. Try running vaseline or similar around the seal where it touches the roof opening.

I think I got charged £90 for the outer seal and about an hour and a bit for labour... although to be fair to our specialist here in Norwich it was a bit of a hassle as my sunroof had to be removed/reinstalled by physically unbolting it (unfortunately, all my sunroof will do is tilt and I can't remove it myself as it won't fully detach itself from the hinge mechanism through use of the electric switches).

As an aside, my inner seal lifts of the guide rail very easily and from inside the car during the downpours I could see water getting in underneath. I did point out the loose inner seal to our specialist before he fitted the outer seal, however, he said not to bother getting the inner seal replaced... with hindsight, I wish he had replaced this and secured it in place with some kind sealant as I reckon that with the new outer sunroof seal would have sorted out the sunroof leaks there and then.

I'll try the ashesive rubber seal option as well as vaseline around the outer seal and see how I get on.

This was one of the first things i did when i got my 944, if your in the uk then B&Q is the best place to look as they have the strips for a couple of quid.

Mark, I only did the sides and back. My sunroof was only leaking on the drivers side at the front - no where else.

(I checked the drains by pouring a little stream of water through each hole just to be sure.)

I have ordered and received some, finding a damp rear seat behind drivers seat this morning, left me none too chuffed.

heavy rain yesterday has shown urgent job in need of tackling.

I shall clean the drain holes first, check the seal are located properly and then Jim's Vaseline idea, if all else fails the neoprene which is actually 2mm not three.

the trouble is mine appears to be leaking at the rear corners.

will report more and photograph as well.

I'm reading this with interest, my sunroof has been leaking from both the back corners for some time now.

Had my fair share of sunroof leaks, outer seal was replaced a while ago, bought for £58 at the time I think, from Max at frazerpart.com. Fitted myself, easy enough job.

Laterally though, and annoying little leak appeared again, it seemed to be getting past the outer seal, pooling in the gutter, and liping up under the inner seal rear corners, and into the car. The inner seal was old, and quite brittle. I decide recently to purchase edge trim off ebay, 9mm tall, grooved inner grip, and fits to edge of 0.5mm to 1.5mm. Ordered 4meters as the sunroof inner measures 3m 10cm approx.

Removed old inner, cleaned the metal thoroughly, went round the top edge with vaseline all round, then fitted new seal. This has worked well. Cost about £12 delivered. Probably not much different in price to OEM inner, but I liked the look of it better, and pretty sure it offers a tighter fit.
